Is there something I can add to my primer to make is semi-rust proof? I HAVE to have this car mostly one color by the Waco mini-meet on 9/23, but I am not ready for paint yet. I know a guy who did an old 50-something ford in gray primer with a little bit of red paint mixed in. One shot--he had a purple-pinkish colored, semi-gloss coat, and never painted over it, as far as I know. I don't really want "purple-pinkish" but need something to prevent rust for a couple years. I redid the roof about 3 years ago, when I took the vinyl top off, and used spray-can Rust-Oleum gray primer, and it is starting to get a little surface rust underneath, so I need to fix and seal that as well.
I just used DuPont Variprime - it is a self etching filler/primer. I liked it Any primer/sealer should give you some decent protection for awhile, until you can get the car painted. You can ask your paint guy if any of them can be tinted. The Variprime can not be tinted (I think) Here is a link to the DuPont epoxy sealer that would work well for what you want to do. It is white and I do not know if it can be tinted. http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/eqsc/QualityStandards/PaintCoating/PaintCoating_pdf/DuPont2910.pdf#search='primer%20sealer%20for%20centari%20dupont'
Velvaseal??? I will have to look that up. thanks for the suggestions. The part about "straight out of the can" sounds good too
Sounds like you've been , . Remember not to get it on the stuff your not going to paint, it becomes more work in the end. I sprayed alot of my chrome after I accidently got sniff happy. I'm paying the price now...
Currently, I am taking off the parts that are being painted, door, fenders, etc. When I get to the roof, I will take the chrome parts off. Where can I get this velvaseal? Is it an AutoZone/O'Reilly product? My O'Reilly sells DuPont, so hopefully, I won't get the drooling blank stare when I ask for it...
O'Reilly is where I get mine. They should have it, 1986S is the part number. Once it dries it is harder to sand than primer, I would say it has more of a consistancy of paint than primer, but sure acts like primer when sprayed. I have even buffed it and made it shine lol. Sometimes I just have to play with stuff to see what it will do, and sometimes it all blows up in my face!!! Dan
Or just spray some clear on it from a rattle can. Its all going to be sanded off before you paint it anyway.
Honestly, I sanded a strip down on my original fender and hit metal on a strip that ended up looking like a lightning bolt from the headlight to where the door connects...I thought to myself, that would look really cool if I could clear coat it and let it stay metal....Kinda like "Greezed Lightnin'" from Grease, with those silver lightning bolts. I don't mind, and actually would prefer that it was harder than primer. I tend to have a heavy hand and wet sand past the primer into the steel. If I had to work harder, it would hold up better leaving me a little primer for the paint to stick to. I will look that part number up tomorrow, and see if it sells in quarts (for the HVLP) as well as rattle cans.
