Hello all I am trying to paint my dash with the correct blue metallic paint. I purchased some spray cans from mustangs unlimited and am finding it impossible to get a decent result. The paint streaks and pools no matter how light I put it on. Has anyone used this paint before? Ted
How did you prepare the dash for painting? I would suspect surface contamination. Don't know if you have a spray gun or a DIY aerosol but an auto paint store mixed a paint that went on both the dash pad and steel dash. I can get the formula if you want it. This is the only picture I found that shows the dash color.

I think buying ready-mix'd paint over the internet..................well, it never comes out to match what you really want..............besides having issues. I have always gone down to my local PPG dealer, either given him the code or vin#, or a piece of painted metal.......................and he has mix'd the spray cans on the spot...........................I rattle can'd my Model A Hot Rod this way..................and it came out great after wet sanding and polishing it...... IMHO
You're probably right, the paint was more gray than blue. Very dissapointed in the quality of the paint.
Ted, I have the interior paint chips for '71. They probably used the same paint for '72. Take a look at DU PONT 9848L Medium Blue Metalic S.G. Micah
Rattle can paint aint paint. But you can make it look decent if conditions are optimal. Ambient temp has to be above 65f. Use a sealer prior to adding the rattle can paint to surface, lightly, and let the the sealer flash. Put the initial coat on very lightly and build sheen upon that. Paint flash is ultra important. If you are using a rattle can laquer then you are adding problems. Sealer can help with this. And I stress, ambient temp above 65f. Above 70 is better.
Thanks everyone for the help and advice. I'm working on it slowly this time making sure every step is as good as I can. I should have a better update in a couple of days. If its not as good as I want I'll just strip it all of and take it to the professionals. Ted

In the shop I use SEM which is a vinyl dye not a paint for the pad and PPG auto paint for the metal dash pan. Before applying SEM, I clean surface with 3M tar and wax remover then wipe it down with warm amonia water, dry it completely. Apply Bulldog adhersion according to direction and then 3 to 4 coats of SEM. Don't apply heavy coats because it will look like plastic and will end up cracking and peeling off not to mention it will fill in a lot of the grain in the surface.
