Well I have had a few days to work on the 74 Comet again. Of course one day it rained and it has been really cold the last 2 days. I spent most of the first day going back over places I hadn't prepped well enough last year and some surface rust had begun. Because of the rain one day and cold 2 days. I pretty much have just piddled around with it. I am cleaning up the pins for the front and rear glass mouldings that got gooped up during some of the body work. (Oh that will be easy to fix later). I finally removed the rear filler panel for the bumper. Decided to remove the dash pad. Whoever wrote how to get it off and the nut locations forgot the part about just slicing your wrists to start with and you'll have the same experience, oh yeah you finally get the socket to the side nuts and then yo ufind out they are one or two sizes smaller then the rest. Being the brainiac I am I then decided to just remove the whole dash. Wouldn't it have been easier to get the dash pad off with the dash out? (beginning to see why this is the 4th year working on this) Of course I have to work outside and my job only allows me working on it a few days a week in the late spring/summer around my schedule. Hopefully below will be images of the left, right and rear of the car along with the shot of the pins I'm trying to clean up. I have some "yellow Box" questions but I'll put those in another thread. Oh because you were going to ask I used Duplicolor T90 Metalic black on the dash
.... too funny ... thanks for the laugh ... been there, except I was laying across a bunch of broken glass, too, at the time myself ... good times ...
Viper Yellow is the color my son picked out. This is actually his car. a father/son project that turned into a dad project while he hangs with the babes. Although he is interested again this year and is helping again. I have a Comet GT hood scoop, and a 79? Firebird rear spolier for it, they seem to fit the body lines real well and don't sit as high as the mustang ones. black and yellow interior with black aftermarket seats with yellow inserts and a black and yellow Race steering wheel. all purchased a few years ago because this was supposed to be a 1-2 summer project..... You know how that goes. He has also decided to leave the Comet emblems off the quarterpanel, the emblem off the hood and the Mercury emblem off the trunk lid for a cleaner look. Not sure if drip rail moulding will go back on. Blacked out grill and tail panel. I think (at least at this point) front scoop and rear spoiler will be body color not black. Playing with the idea of doing those in a flat or satin finish same color as body. I'm thinking the gloss to satin might be a nice subtle contrast. What is everyones thought on that?
Today I finally removed the fuel tank, hit some rust on the brackets under the dash, and spent a long time measuring and remeasuring to drill for the firebird spoiler. I think it fits the body lines real well. Notice in the rear shot how the mounting pedestals line up with the center of the tail lights. Also a shot of my son working today. I told him to get out the sand/media from the blasting vacuumed out... LOL it will keep turning up for months.
I agree, that spoiler looks like it belongs. I've heard of a few guys using them before, but I have to tell you, after seeing it on your Comet just now, it sure looks sweet! I might have to start a search in the local junk yards....
This actually is his car. We got it when he was 15 was supposed to be a good father son project before he started driving and motivation to do something with me. he's almost 20 now and you see how much we got done. Of course one summer he went to Belize with church and Amsterdam as a People to People Sports ambassador. (He went to swim and we paid a fortune for it). Anyway now he thinks the car is cool and wants it done.
Todays progress, more pics Well not much done today. I have a meeting soon and it's supposed to rain so short day for me having to work outside. I started blasting the hood. I thought I had a solid hood with just a bit of surface rust. (don't tell my wife, I tell her I'm always right) well the bottom of the hood at the front lip is swiss cheese, the front isn't so bad, a few pinholes in the center and a few on the left front. Ran out of blasting material and ran ver to Northern just in time to watch a truck pull away with a pallet of Amber blast. Of course they were out and Harbour Freight wanted 30.00 more for 50lbs of the same stuff. Not sure how I'm going to repair it yet so I just hit it with some self etching primer. The new door I got had the holes wrong for the window regulator so I cut out the piece from my old door and used it as a template. Holes done but regulator not in yet. I also removed the sending unit from the tank I removed yesterday..... I think it might need some help. I seriously thinking about a 70 mustang tank or was it 69? I'll have to search the boards again. Well, that's all for today. Any suggestions on what I should do with the hood? Other then what you see it is straight and smooth. I guess I should have put this under "Projects" If someone wants to move it that's fine.
