Hey guys here's a little insight of what I have. 72 Mav. 2 door coupe. 250 Inline 6 bought it for $800 about a month ago. I'm currently trying to get this thing running as it has been sitting for a year. Any advice on taking the steps to get it running? I am an extreme novice when it comes to working(restomoding) cars so I would appreciate some help along this journey. Any suggestions would help! One thing is I would like for you all to check how my torque boxes look and see if they look good. Thanks and here are some photos.
The first step in getting it running is make sure the inside of the tank is not rusty. Then replace all rubber fuel hose (for added insurance that your car will not catch fire). Clean the carb, check the distributor cap, rotor, wires and plugs replace as necissary. Put a fresh battery and gas in, this will usually get a car that's been sitting running.
Lay on the floor, and take a picture of the torque boxes from underneath the car, then we can tell you what's going on. doesn't look too bad from what you've posted.
...fresh cheap oil and filter...this is only to flush out the water and any gas that might get in from a flooding carb., after you get it running then put the good stuff in...
Many years ago, I bought a 70 that had been sitting for ever! I got it home and it rolled over, was getting gas, but no fire. I 'checked' and cleaned the points and it still didn't work. I ended up replacing the points and condenser (for about $10) and voila!! Vroom, vroom! So even if they 'look' good, and you 'clean' them, the points can definitely give you greif if you're not careful. It will usually start with bad plugs and wires, it just won't run too smooth. Just my $0.02 worth.

if its been sitting for a long time you may want to unhook the coil and turn the car over a good few times to get the back up in the cylinders. or you can pour a little transmission fluid down the spark plug hole then try to start it. it will start and run with the trans fluid in there as long as you only put a LITTLE bit just to lube the upper cylinder walls . if you go the trans fluid route dont be too concerned with all of the smoke youll get. it will smoke like crazy until the trans fluid is burned off but it wont hurt anything. it will stop eventually. I did this with an old flat head motor that had been setting for 12 years in a garage. it smoked like crazy for a couple of minutes then it ran like a new truck.
Just an update guys. Well I discovered that I don't have an exhaust system lol. So I have to add that to the list of things. I'm taking it to my mechanic to see what he can do to get the engine running. Then I plan on buying an exhaust system and installing it myself.
