My trunk separator was looking bad. Had some tears and yuck on it. I did cover it with splatter paint when I did the trunk but it still wasn't worthy. Here is what I did to make a new one. 1) Get 30# Roofing Asphalt Paper 2) Remove original separator 3) Use original and trace onto new paper 4) Cut it out 5) Hang new one in car 6) Hang original one over new one for reinforcement since the original is much thicker. 7) Sit back and admire What is interesting is the the new roofing paper had shingle guide lines drawn on it. I never noticed but the factory separator has the same guide lines drawn on it ... maybe it truly was roofing paper from the factory! Here are some pictures .... http://web.mac.com/dmhines/iWeb/Our Website/Grabber Trunk.html I am also installing my two piece carpet ... that's another thread ...
You're on the wrong coast! Actually .. I was gonna trace and cut a second one out to use as a template since most peoples are not suitable to trace or are completely gone ... however, I didn't have enough Material to make a second one ...
trace it out on paper and copy it..500 times...then you could send a template to all your friends (like me) ...frank...
Now look what you did Frank! I'll see if I can get some sort of material that I can make a durable template from before I put the rear seat back in .... some heavy vinyl would be the best. Then I could roll it up and ship it to folks in a tube if they want to borrow the template. The one in my yellow car has a large tear in it so I'll be putting one in there was well ... eventually ...
Dan For my sub speaker template I used just regular paper with all the cut edges taped and protected with shipping tape. I have mailed this out and got it back several times and it is holding up wonderfully. I can fold it up and stick it into a standard 8 x 10 envelope.
From my days as a carpenter, I'd say they probably did use roofing paper, the nail lines look the same. Maybe Ford had a special contract for a thicker material. Anywho, LOOKING GOOD!!!
I have the heavier paper in my mav.. its torn in a few locations and I have been trying to find a replacement piece.. no luck but have found out the thick stuff is known as 90# paper. used on OLD houses were they used random boards of different widths.. not available up here anymore.. .. there is some stuff called leakpreventor.. it has a sticky side and when you put 2 pieces together you end up with 1 piecethat is real close to the original thick ness.. thats what I plan on doin .. hope it works
Dan, I can't believe that you openely admitted you were actually driving your Maverick around with that horrific tear in the roofing paper in the trunk! Ha! Man, I wish that was all I had to do to my Maverick to get it back to factory original! Nice job (as usual). I appreciate and admire your attention to detail. (Ctrl^D)
Dan, it looks great! I also wondered abut the lines on the factory paper. It sure seems like good 'ol tar paper to me. My only comment is that roofing felt is very flammable and if someone isn't going for a factory look, it sure would be nice to get a panel of a different material in there... I don't have an idea what, but thought I'd throw the issue out for others to consider.
