i was wondering..... at what point do you need to run higher octance... when its pinging? or by looking at plugs? i have used Purple race gas.. and i noticed a big diference in power.. and the engine is quieter...not sure how to explain quieter... smoother maybe.. dunno... but anyways.. give me your thoughts thanks
I dunno how much race gas cost at your track, but I wouldn't worry about spending money on the higher octane just yet. I'd look into doing whatever it takes to get your 60' down (1.7ish - gears, positive traction, sticky tires, higher stall converter, etc.) If your engine is pinging, your timing is probably advanced too much. I assume you are bracket racing - as you know, the bottom line is to be consistant and to have fun - no matter how fast you go. If pinging is a concern, back the timing down a couple of degrees, run 94 octane and have fun. It'd be interesting to see the e.t. comparison between the two fuels (94 vs 104+) - although difficult to do in an uncontrolled environment.
a lot of it depends on your compression. i run aound 11-1 and my engine builder said either sunoco purple (106 octane) or vp 110 (107 octane). about $6 at the trackfor either.
i am not sure what my fnal compression is... but i run 91 octane...and i have used purple as well.. i notice that the engine runs a little better with the mix of 91 and purple... pinging... i have never heard pinging... but i am not 100% sure what it sounds like.. yes i need traction.. i am getting 3.45 gears soon... and that will give me the incentive to get some 15"rims and new tires... sooner than expected.. i cant wait... for now i will just run some 235 60 15 street tires.. better than the 215 70 14 i have now on a 6.5" rim.. lol
If I run 93 octane with no octane boost, I can hear pinging if I have my windows rolled up and the radio off. I generally run 93 with 2 cans of octane boost. Sometimes 3. I want to get ahold of some of the race fuel, but it's hard to come by around here. One day........Preston
Can you get pinging in one cylinder only? And at idle? I have never heard it, that I know of, but today, I was tinkering in the garage and at idle, it sounds like #4 is clicking really loud. Can't tell if it is header leak, clicking tappet, or ping. Pretty loud, especially if you put your head in the engine bay and look around near that header tube. I should add that I am running 8:1 stock pistons, GT40P heads with stock rockers, hooker 6901, initial timing was 10, just bumped up to 12 today. Not sure if the click/ping was there before. When sun comes up, I will back off timing and see if it goes away. If it does, I would guess that it is the "ping".
scoop, when i am looking for a sound...( vac. exh. ping. squeek.bearing roar) of any kind, i use a piece of ...heater hose....(5/8" or 3/4") cut at about 3' ft, long. put one end to my ear and move the other end around on the moter (at idle). . there are some scary sounds in a good motor so you need to have a idea what you are listening for. for a ...knocking or clicking... sound i use a 3'ft. long piece of broom handle (or a long handle screw driver). put one end to the (head.. valve cover...oil pan..etc.) the other end to your ear. J.M.O. ...frank...
broom handle + fan + human head = not a good thing I have done the long screwdriver thing a bit. Thought I was "ingenious" (sp?) for that. Guess not. Now, I have a squeak that comes and goes...not sure if it is where the header hits the fender, seat is loose, something rattling in the glove box or ashtray (quarters?), or am I hearing the same sound from the inside and it sounds a bit different. Need to get out there next weekend and take a look/hear.
more power means more rattles and squeaks... if pinging sounds like a bearing in a tin can , then i do not have pinging at all. what i do have is lifter noise... and i adjust them.. then adjust them.. and then adjust them... and i am getting tired of,.... adjusting them i guess i need roller tip rockers and polylocks
We've always refered to it as "valve clatter". To me it sounds just like the name.....a "tinny" clattering sounds under acceleration. Preston
