What radiators will interchange in a 72 Maverick w/ a factory 250 6 auto w/ factory air and power steering? Thanks Frank
i am not sure exactly on your setup...but i will tell you waht i had...what i have and what i got.... i HAD a 170 CID.....did the 302 swap....and i used the 2 row 170 radiator for awhile and then i called www.radiators.com and got a 4 row radiator from a 1967 ford mustang with a 302....it is the exact same size as the stock replacement for the maverick, but it was a little cheaper...(go figure that out...same part number) the only problem....the lower hose attachment was on the wrong side...so i had it swapped at a radiator shop for $20.... the problem i have with overheating i think...is due to bored .040 9.5:1 compression.... 15 inch fan and no shroud....i know have a 17 inch fan and a shroud and as soon as i get the engine back together i will be able to see how much cooler it runs... good luck... but i am sure that anything from mustang pre 73 will fit.... my radiator dimensions are 16 X 21.... not sure of part number but call and ask radiators.com and they will get you hooked up.... i paid 215 for mine... but we have a local pick up warehouse and i saved shipping costs
heat Stmanser my 302 is bored .040 over also with 9.1 compression mine was gettin a bit warm nothing serious so I added a tranny cooler ( cheap fix) now it runs cool as a cucumber....$35.00 for kit.
really......hmm..i will check into that....where did you mount it at...? i have been contimplating moving the battery to the trunk and do all that NHRA stuff... and then maybe mount a tranny cooler where the battery is .... ideas? thoughts?? thanks
Stmanser you need to mount the trans cooler in front of the radiator at the bottom. You need to get airflow through it so to cool the fluid. When I was a young dumb kid I mounted one on the inner fender well. needless to say it did'nt do much till i placed it on the radiator. What a difference! Hey man good luck with your overheating problems. I feel for ya. You seem to be fighting a battle. Hope you win it. Mike
everything interchanges but but for an exact fit only one for a maverick one will work... i say get the right one in the first place. use your current tanks and have a radiator shop recore it to a 3 or 4 row put the bigger fan in with the shroud and don't forget to run a highflow 160 thermotsat from mr gasket or robertshaw (spelling?) ! nothing can help more then then that then a 4 core which you already have. i know its hot in AZ but on a hot day 95+ my car will run no more then 180 driving maybe 190 sitting in traffic... on a cold day 50 - 60s 160 all day. my other car well thats another problem in itself. good luck guys
My trans one day started to boil over. I'd fill it and fill it and fill it, call eagle trans cause the rebuilt it just days ago( for the third time), they said to stop racing, I said "I havent, yet"! So I fill it and fill it, then one day a wise old man lurking in the back bays of a shop I was filling at(the trans) tells me to install a trans cooler in front of the radiator. I went straight to Pep Boys and bought one and installed it there and have not overheated since(boiled over trans fluid that is).
I appreciate every one's help ! I don't have a known overheating problem I am buyng a car that needs a radiator because it was in a front end collision ! I have gotten several stories locally about what fits and I wanted to buy just 1 radiator (the right one ) Frank
I've burned up a couple of automatic transmissions in my short life, but I have never heard of or seen the ATF boil over?
Neither had I, untill eagle transmission got a hold of it. They also costed me a flywheel (and a starter) by adding washers to shim out my starter! DUMBBAZZES! Their solution in the end-cut half of the splined section that goes into my stall convertor(was new), you can guess what happened. They have taken/wasted about $2000 and I ended up elsewhere. Sorry to vere off the thread guys.
I never heard of a tranny spewing out fluid unless it was overfilled and was pushing it out the breather of the tranny at the top. Learn something new everyday.
