All righty guys, I've got a big question.

The Maverick had a rattle coming from under the hood. So I start her up and look for the source of the noise, and the gear below the fan (that turns the power steering pump) is jiggling. I turned off the car and saw that the power steering belt is twisted.

So I pull off the belt.

And well, now it's just hard to turn the steering wheel, but I still get that rattling noise. Don't know if it means anything, but it's two smaller belts that run around that gear, the fan gear, and the alternator.

    Help me. :16suspect

...yes. Pulley, not gear. 'Scuse me.

It's way down there at the bottom and I'm pretty sure there's just one central bolt. I couldn't get at it with a wrench, I'll go at it with a rachet tomorrow.

    Any more ideas, in case?

Another thing. It's like there's two pulleys there.

One that turned the power steering pump, one belt. Then another than went to the alternator and the radiator fan, two belts, behind the power steering pulley. The rearward one is the one that's jiggling.

yeah if that loose that will rattle like hell, dont take the center bolt out that bolts to the crank and holds on harmonic balencer , there are 4 bolts around the outside of that bolt, might be 9/16 or 5/8 bolts , keep us posted and good luck

The pulleys are all one piece, attatched to the ballancer, which I believe is actually a dampener, I think.

Yeah, that would make a hell of a racket. And dual pulleys would sure be the trend of the era.

Girlfriend just remembered seeing a few empty holes around the main bolt. Oy.

Anyone know the width and length of those there bolts? Looks like a trip to Home Depot.

well if they are broken off you might want to invest in an easy out, if they just fell out , you might be ok, its prolly 1/2 inch bolt act size of bolt where threads are, and 1 1/2 long not sure on that one though

an e-z out , pulls broken off bolts out by drilling a hole in the bolt an then a piece looks like a corkscrew, thread it in, to the left of course it should start turning the bolt out , pretty straight forward, you can get it at tractor supply , home depot , lowes ,etc directions are on the back of them , and 15 bucks should cover that, but if they feel out you wont need it

tighten the bolts on the pulley and start it again. if it still rattles then you may have a crankshaft problem.

If you do have to use a e-z-out....try drilling the hole with a left hand drill bit. You may get lucky and it'll back out while drilling. Good Luck(y)
