    Hey all,

I assume this indicates an 8” Ford rear end with 3.00 gearing?

I’ve dropped the drive shaft and removed the 10 nuts around the outside. Wanting to weld a nut on the bottom hole for future gear oil changes. I assume I need to remove the yolk before I can pull the front cover off?

Do I have to worry about “adjustment”if the yolk has to come off? Pre-load?? Lash??

I haven’t searched here yet, but wanted to post the other first.

    Thx

the whole chunk comes out as a unit.
    it's awkward and heavy.

if it is the first time it's been removed it will have the dreaded copper washers. they are a boy dog to get off...at least for me.

You need to pull the axles out too.
That's not a "cover" on the front. It's the entire carrier with the gears and everything. No need to remove the yoke unless you are replacing the seal, bearings, etc.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I will slide the axles out some, remove the small copper washers and get it out of there for a little clean-up and welding a nut to make future oil changes possible.

that's a lot of work just to put a drain plug in. what I do is install one if I ever have a reason to go into the rear end...axle change, bearings, gear change or add a track lock of some kind.

40+ years, likely never serviced, I’d rather have quick look and make it easier to service in the future.

4 bolts on each end to slide the axles out 6” or so?

Yes, but you may want to pull the axles all the way out. The seals can tear from the weight of the axle resting on them.

    Hey all,

Pulled axles and third member, no problems. I will work on it some this week and post what I end up doing.

Nothing in the world like the smell of 40 year old gear oil. STINKY! You will never get the smell of that out of some things. If I ever load an old gear chunk into the trunk of a car, it goes inside a garbage bag, or two, to keep the smell contained.
