How can I tell if I have an 8in or 9in rear end in my 73 maverick 302. I'm pretty sure it's factory original. I'm needing to rebuild the rearend. I have a grinding sorta noise and the axle shaft bearings have been replaced a while back. There's grease in the housing. I haven't jacked it up to listen to exactly where the noise is coming from yet. Weather permitting, I'll get to that this weekend. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If it is factory, it is 8". If you cannot get to all of the nuts with a socket, and have to hit one of the lower ones only with a wrench, you have a 9".

9s never came factory on mavs or comets.

Grinding could be brakes. Bearings are more of a roaring noise.
