Which adhesive have you guys used to glue your rearview mirror to the windshield? I used this permatex adhesive yesterday. Later on the mirror fell off and it chipped the windshield. I figured maybe I added too much adhesive so I cleaned it up and bought the same adhesive again. Little did I know the same thing would happen again, except this time a nice chunk off the windshield stayed on the metal button. It hurts to mess up a perfect windshield doing something so simple as this.
I bought it at autozone and it was the cheaper one since they didn't have the expensive adhesive in stock. I am going to try Oreillys they had like 5 different ones to choose from.

I'd say you used too much adhesive that over heated during the curing, can't think of any other reason it could bust the windshield...

On second look I don't think you have the correct button for that mirror, it's to narrow... If the mirror mount wedged against the glass when you tightened it, I can see it prying a chunk out of the windshield...

I glued mine in place with 3M High Bond, that was probably four months ago...

That actually makes sense. How can I find the right button for it? Or should I buy a new mirror?

The buttons of old were straight sided, while the newer ones are trapezoidal shaped like the one you have... Mine is currently opposite, straight button, angled mirror... Which from looking at yours should mean my mirror won't fit on button, but it too is a bit large for button... I plan on dissembling another mirror I have with bad glass and see if I can use that mount on the later mirror(appear to be same internally)...

Im going to do some searching on ebay or hopefully Craig has an extra mirror assembly. Is the 2door and 4door windshield the same? I have my 4 door im scrapping and might use the windshield if I can.

Looks like the glue worked TOO good. :D

2-door and 4-door glass is the same.

I have the correct "button" if you need it, as well as a rear view mirror.

I've always taken any of mine that have come off, to the local glass shop and they always did it as a courtesy. They must figure that you will think of them later on when you need a windshield replaced.

That's crazy what it did, I can't tell you how many mirrors I have "removed" by yanking on them taking the whole assembly leaving the glass unscathed. It was probably one of those things though, I did it to windshields that were garbage and had I done that to a good one it would have broke.

Glass can do some very odd things .... break when "it shouldn't", and survive hits you would never believe. Quickest way to break it is a sharp metal edge hitting it, in a very small spot.

Thats the stuff I used and it worked great, just ONE drop and spread it all over the metal tab, then hold it firmly to the w/shield for about a minute, let it dry for an hour or two and install the mirror. I must have done a thousand of these installs in my autobody career and never had an issue. Sorry you had a problem, that really is frustrating!!

What i dont understand is that I glued the button twice last year and i didnt have an issue until now. So I didnt really pay attention to the button I thought it was the adhesive. I bought a mustang 68 69 reproduction mirror yesterdsy and the button looks like as soon as I tighten it up the same thing is going to happen. Ill post pictures of the new mirror in a little bit.
