Hello, I am putting a 302 in my Maverick that originally had a 250 I-6. I think I'll leave the 3-on-the-tree in since they're not all that common these days and it's kinda fun to drive. The Maverick will be a weekend driver / hobby car. I don't plan on taking it to the track or anything. I basically just want it to have good power for the occasional "red-light race" and I'm looking for that deep V-8 rumble sound. Do you think I should just run the 302 as is but mabey just put headers and flowmasters on? Should I put in a slightly bigger cam? If so, which size is recommended? Roller rockers? Stroker kit? I'm pretty good with body work but I'm still learning motors. I keep finding threads where people want to race and are trying to get all the horsepower and speed they can and are buying top end racing parts but I just don't think I need all that. I don't, however know exactly what I do need. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A small cam will help out and make it sound good. Might want to bump up the torque convertor a little. Headers will be good too and a 4 bbl carb. Better ignition and coil, and distributor will make it more reliable. Only problem will be the headers. They all say not to be used with a column shift, But there are some on here that have made some mods to the linkage and got them to work. Try a search to find there posts.:)

    Edelbrock Performer intake (or equivalent)
    Performer camshaft
    600 carb
    hooker 6901 headers
good ignition (opinions vary) but i went with MSD

and i'd opt for a good set of street gears for the rear, like 3.55's or so

Thank you for your input. That is very helpful. Should I disregard the thing about the torque converter? If so, why? Thanks.
