Where is the best place to put relays,
    near the device it serves,
    near the battery,
    or in a central location?

Racecar application only, no street use.
    thanks,
    Jerry

I moved the battery to the trunk, and will put a box with all my relays right where the battery was. Nice flat location, starter solenoid is already there. I bought one box already but it was too small to fit the solenoid, and the thermostatic fan switches and the relay for the fuel pump. When I find one big enough I will mount it right there.

Most relays I have seen end up under the hood.

The purpose of relays is to control high current with little current. Therefore, theoretically, you should position them somewhere where they will give you the shortest run between the battery and what you are controlling.
