Looking at my bumpers, they have a lot of pitting and rust on the backside. With no place to re-chrome them in Fairbanks, how does one go about removing the chrome from the bumpers?
Are you just wanting to paint your bumpers? if so you dont have to remove the chrome just scuff them up so there not shiny and spray them with paint. thats what I did on my first car. couldn't afford the 425 buck to re-chrome at the time
Yes...A good etching primer will bite into the chrome. You do still have to scuff em up though. (hes' gonna have to the get rid of the rust and pitting anywhoo)
Careful with the sandblasting...It will leave a very rough texture behind which may be hard to get rid of once you prime and paint...Lots of filler primer will be in order...So much for a quick cheap bumper makeover...
I saw some painted on a mustang yesterday... the guy used. To each their own.. to each their own. He also used it in his trunk and floor boards...to cover the rust. Probably will do a cheap paint job myself until I can afford the 8k one I really really want. As that yellow cracked and ..not peeling oddly enough paint has to go..
I suppose if you bought media blasting pelts and not actual sand it would be a little easier on the bumpers
And lungs.. my uncle died in December from silicosis. Then again he wore 3m face masks not self contained breathing gear, but never heard of it he hadn't either till he ended up in hospital...that was a horrible slow death. I vote let a professional sand blast bumpers unless you have the right set up to do it.
