Is there a suitable alternative to mig welding all the holes left by removing the chrome from the sides and top of my Maverick? I'm removing the halo vinyl top and side mouldings.

Some people try to fill holes with Bondo but it only pops out again ruining the paint job. Welding the holes shut is the only right way to do it.

Anther way to fill the holes is with lead solder. It's not the easiest way to do it, but they will be filled forever and they will not bubble back out like bondo does.

:) See, that's what I get for saying "the only way" lol. I forgot all about lead. Next time I'll leave the body shop questions to Jean in the first place!

    Something Different...

Has anyone ever tried something like JB-Weld? I don't have any idea if it would work or not, but it may be worth a try on an old panel or something. Personally, I fire up my trusty little mig, but not everyone has access to one of those. Might be a workable alternative. Anyone up for an experiment?????

use the ball-end of a body type hammer to kinda center punch the hole so that the metal goes inward towards the hole, then patch it with fiberglass, sand smooth and finish it off with a thin coat of bondo/filler and then sand that smooth as well....works great

    Thanks guys.......

Fear...Have you had success using the fiberglass? If so are you talking about laying strips of it with resin or using some kind of stranded fiberglass filler like 'kittyhair"?

Damn I didn't know that removing that piece of trim was that much trouble.

Try this: Use a rubber mallet and punch the metal down like was said before, but instead of fiberglass get some cheap metal mesh that bends easily, any kind will do. Kinda sink it down into the holes and cover over with bondo, sand smooth, paint.

The fiberglass with the resin,it works great the way i described, yes I tried it..........removed all the trim on my Fairmont.Don`t use straight bondo, its not meant for filling in holes. It wil hold up for a while but will eventually crack and fall out.

Be careful when you MIG them shut. There is alot of insulation behind the headliner ... Burst into flames really fast ...

My dad removed the Ford letters from the front of his hood (71 Ford Pickup). He pop rivited the holes and covered it with a small amount of bondo. It has held up for 17 years. I guess it depends on the size of the holes and whether or not you want to take the chance on screwing up a good paintjob. If it were me. I would have them welded shut the proper way, that way it would last with less risk.

    not bad.......

Actually it's all pretty straight, a little dull, but over all in good condition. I'm going to be removing the LDO Vinyl top and it's trim plus the body side chrome. I'm located in Northwest Georgia.
