Still looking for any suggestions on what to do with my steering wheel lock. I'm trying to disable it/destroy it but the way it's designed it's very hard to damage. I can't really drive my car right now because I'm holding the lock nub in with a coat hanger.
lock her up It's easy. Remove the steering wheel. Then the two plastic covers around the steering column. Inside the column you'll see a worm gear that is turned by the ignition setup, to push the pin up that locks the steering wheel. You just have to use a few tools to get at the worm gear and pin to remove it.
let's look at this another way. you can also remove the steering wheel by taking the rag joint loose from the steering box, i think 4 bolts out of the firewall, 2 bolts under the dash, shift linkage loose, unplug the harness and the whole column will fall in the front seat. wah la steering wheel removed. j.m.o. ...frank...:bananaman :bananaman p.s. this is only intended to be a funny. you are getting way too stressed over this.
steering wheel The metal piece will either pop off or have screws on the dash side of the wheel itself. Removing the rag joint won't do any good, but it probably could use replacing anyway. At that will do is allow you to remove the whole column, which you'll have to unbolt 4 bolts at the floor, then the shift lingake and unplug the wiring at the bottom of the column. Keep working on the steering wheel and the nut size is about 15/16" or 7/8" torqued on at about 80# using a locking nut. Then to remove the wheel you'll either have to have a puller or a air hammer. Air hammer is the quicker and dirty way. You leave the nut just a little on, pull on the wheel with one hand trying to pull it off, and with the air hammer, on the shaft give it a few shots. The vibration and you pulling will break the wheel loose from the shaft.
Well of course I'm stressed about it.......I can't drive my mav! And I'm not about to remove my entire steering column and junk it due to some stupid little metal nub. There HAS TO BE A WAY to keep it from popping out and locking the wheel all of the time.
steering wheel "Kirk to Enterprise, beam me up Scotty. No intelligent life present". Have you read a thing I wrote down? Or just pissed at the car and unwilling to work on it?
I just refuse to believe that there is no simple way to do this. It's just a little metal tab.......it just needs to stop locking the wheel. I KNOW there has to be a way to just stop it from locking.
last resort One last way, just not what I prefer. Go down to the zoo and get the biggest, ugliest gorilla. Bring it home and have the gorilla twist the steering wheel back and worth several times. That should break the pin.
