My gas tank is shot all to heck. Could someone please point me in a good direction so I can find a repro tank? thanks! Austin (Formerly Maverick-AR)
No reproductions available for a 71 but you can convert to a Mustang tank. Here is a how to by Mavaholic http://www.maverick.to/gtu_faq.php
you can also get a (new) tank for '76-'77 at advance auto parts. you will have to get the straps also.. ......
I don't know about if there is a difference in how it installs but the answer is yes, Late model gas tanks were 19 gallons and early Maverick tanks were 15 Gallons
straps are longer...that is the only diff. i see in install...i used my '73 sending unit... ...:Handshake ...
Thanks fellas, Looks like the repro '76 from advance is the right way to go for me, as I don't have the place or ability to do the fab work for a mustang tank. once again thanks!
I wonder why he didn't just use that tank as a drop-in unit, like it was designed. As opposed to re-engineering a mounting system.
The 76 tank uses a different type vent but the parts are available from Ford. The part numbers are in my article.
JC Whitney tells me that they can special order the exact tank for the 71. I had to order one to replace my tank in my 71. I have not received it yet, but I will keep you updated. If someone knows different please let me know.
I have a tank from a 74 Comet, 15 gallon looks to be in good shape, can pull tomorrow and give a better description and pics if desired, will include straps and vent, however the sender I need. It is available from AutoKrafters. If you are interested, let me know. I will take $100 plus shipping. rk
I know it wasn't originally a drop in tank. Wouldn't be hard to convert it that way though. That's all I was thinking.
