hi i would like to know if a toploader whit tag# RUG BF1 and if the shifter is mounted at the right place.
The best way to know is to know what car it came out of. Year and model. You could also measure the tranny. If the overall length is around 24", then it is right. If it is 31" or thereabouts, then it won't work. (at least not cost effectively) You also need to measure the very tip of the tranny. The little nose on the input shaft, that rides inside the crank bushing. If the nose measures under 1", then it is wrong. If it is over 1", then it is right. To recap: Nose must be over 1" long, and length of tranny (nose to tail shaft end) should be around 24". If either of those is off, then get another tranny. I don't remember the exact measures off the top of my head, but if you loosely use what I gave you, it will work. Dave
Dan, I think if you look a little closer you'll see the third rod. It's hidden by the last one. You can make out the shift lever if you look closely and then you can follow the rod.
According to your tag you have: RUG-BF1 1972 Fairlane 351 wide ratio After 12/1/71 28-spline I suspect Fairlane means Torino. http://www.4speedtoploaders.com/ www.toploaderheaven.com As far as 'will it fit?' These cars never came with TL's so some mods or changes to the shifter, tailshaft or shifter opening may be required. Seth
No Fairlane in 72... If it is Torino, it won't work in a Mav. Wide ratio is a good thing though. If it was a short shaft... Dave
the tranny is from a 73 gran torino sport the lenght is 24" and the nose measures more that 1" that is correct . Is the shifter is bolted to the right place to fit on my comet? i send you another pics for stop the confusion
A short shaft toploader 4 speed is identical in every way, that matters, to the toploader 3 speed that was available in our cars. If you start with 3 speed car, all you have to do is pull the gearbox and shifter. Then put the short tail 4 speed gearbox and shifter in it's place... Done. Don't even have to disturb the bellhousing. Easy-cheezy Dave
My book says late72 torino small block. And it looks like the plate that relocates the shifter from the mid mount to tailmount. it should be right for your car .But I`m no expert .I`m doing the toploader game in a mav agian after about 10yrs. Hope this helped Chris
WOW! That turns my world view upside-down! I never knew they made a short tail Torino 4 speed... I have never seen one before now. If it measures the same as a C4, then it should go just fine. The shifter might not be exact if you have a factory 3 speed Mav with floor shift. I would certainly try it! The Torino is a longer car, so the shifter might sit a little further back. Wouldn't think it would be a lot though. A wide ratio tranny is the way to go. Dave
I suspect you are correct, but the availability of short shaft TL's must be a problem since we see so many hacked up tranny housings posted in pics here. Seth
i know i think i will sell it on ebay. how much do you think the pedal setup and all the linkage worth?
