So Rust Bomb from Orison's is discontinued. Talked them on the phone and they said adding a gelling agent to Evapor-rust wouldn't work. Deox gel is ridiculously priced to ship to America... I have plenty of HCL and Phosphouric acid, but want to try something more enviromentally/people friendly first. Time is not that big of an issue (just ordered my rust bullet today) and I can let it sit for days if needed as long as it works. Wasn't too impressed with Naval Jelly when I used it on my fenders... This will be for my interior floors and the interior of my trunk. Any gels you guys could recommend that meet what I'm looking for? Thanks!
so you have and know what the chemistry is ...( Phosphoric acid, convertic iron oxide, rust, to inert iron phosphate) but you want to "play" with "alternative" treatments??? hmmm.. vinegar??? coke has phosphoric acid.. Try Rust Destroyer at Home Despot
Yea - I have the paint stripper, hydrochloric acid for rust removal, phosphoric acid to take off the flash rush and all that... But I'd rather not worry about the fumes in my garage and that some might run off into the lake behind my house. Rust bomb and Deox-c was supposed to work and be safe to use. So if there was something like it out there, I'd give it a try first. If it didn't work well I was still going to use the chemicals. Looks like Rust Destroyer is a converter... I'm trying to actually get rid of the rust before applying the Rust Bullet. Thanks tho! :Handshake
I cleaned quarter panels with heavy surface rust (no pitting) with OSPHO. Altho OSPHO is a converter, it worked well to remove the heavy surface rust. Brush it on, let it work for about 20 min, wire brush it and wipe it off with paper towels. Don't let it dry. Repeat as necessary. After a couple of applications the quarter panels were shiny metal with no rust. The OSPHO that was left after the wipe down took care of any flash and kept the panels looking new for weeks. Try that on a small area and I think you'll be pleased with the result. Fumes aren't a problem and, unless you spill it, no run off.
good point... whatever you use you dont have to use so much that it runs off into the lake. You have to face the science of what rust is. Ospho is very popular in the marine industry, at boatyards.
