I'm sure a lot of you have tried this, but I have been living under a rock for the last couple of decades. I have used phosphoric acid, grit blast, Evaporust ($$$$) etc. to remove rust from steel parts when in fact, there was a cheap, non toxic way to do it that I never tried, until now. A lot of old timers (I'm pushing 60, so I shouldn't talk) have been using vinegar to dissolve rust so I thought I would give it a try.

My axle hubs and retaining plates were getting rusty, so I immersed them in white vinegar and let them soak for about 24 hours. To my amazement, the rust either was removed or could be removed with a mild scouring pad and little effort. Everything ended up silver again! I couldn't believe it!

I have read that as well. I chose vinegar because I had a couple gallons of it.
