I know very little about body work and painting so I was wondering if I could get any tips before I embark on my newest endeavor. I have suppled a picture of the overall area and one picture of a closer view of the worst damage. I want to sand it down first so does anyone have any tips?

Its a very interesting story I think. This car has been very bad luck for me. Just rebuilt the carb. and done a good amount of work in that region a few weeks before that. Then one night I was coming out of work. Started the car like normal. It ran for about 10 second idling and died. I checked everything out and it seemed okay. As I started it again the car caught fire. It wasn't a huge fire and luckily the fire department was about 1/2 mile away. It destroyed the newly rebuilt carb., the new ac, the air intake, all of the lines that were up there, the shocks, and did that to the hood.

Time for a new hood, looks like it's been bondo'd up already.

If it isnt warped you can repair it but it does appear to have bondo in an unusual area.Perhaps it was bent and repired at some point in the past.I dont think its unsalvageable but it will take some work.Good luck.

How do you plan on sanding the hood? By hand or with an air powered sander. The reason I ask is because if you do plan on sanding the hood down, it would be advisable to use a grinder to remove the old bodyfiller and then sand the rest of the hood with a DA and 80 grit sandpaper. The underside of the hood is cooked as well, so you'll have to sand that down too. Once the paint and filler are gone, then you can see what you are up against. If the hood is badly bent up where the filler is or if it's warped, then it might be a good idea to see about replacing it.

Yeah, it'd be a lot of time and work redoing that hood. It would be likely be less expensive and easier to just get another straight hood and spray it. Good luck!

Anyone know where I could get a cheap hood that would fit and about how much it would cost?

Why don't you put it through your auto insurance and let a professional fix it.
