So I've been looking at a lot of pictures of Mavericks and Comets trying to decide on that right look I want to shoot for with my car. When getting started I was thinking of having scoops installed on my hood for something differen't, but I'm fast realising that this wouldn't be different, on the contrary it would be the norm. I like the look, but was wondering what you all would do?

How much do scoops usually cost?
What look do you like best? Single scoop? Double? Facing forward? Rear?
    Are they difficult to paint?
    Hard to install?
    Can I install them myself?

Thanks folks, the information is greatly appreciated.

    Dan.

Thats a loaded question with no right answer. Just pick something you like a go for it. Installation will depend on what you get. Anything from bolt on, to weld on, to fiberglass on. Painting a scoop shouldnt be any different than painting the hood.

I agree. Just look at a lot of pics and go with your instincts. Don't get us started! But if you really want my opinion.....I say if ya have a Mav, go with the grabber hood....comet, go GT hood. I like more original looks, but thats me.

Go for whatever floats your boat. Just make sure whatever you go with is legal in your state if you want to avoid any hassles. Some taller scoops attract a lot of attention. just my :2cents:

Don't attempt to bond fiberglass or ABS to a steel hood.
They have different expand/contract rates and WILL crack and look crappy.
If you use a fiberglass scoop, either bond it to a fiber hood, or bolt it to a steel hood.
If you want to bolt it, you have to get a scoop with an internal flange or with built in studs.

I have a 70 Dodge Demon scoop bolted to my hood. It fit like a glove.
It was a stock fiberglass scoop with built in studs.
It is double scoop in the front and stands almost 5" tall at the highest point, but only adds about an inch of actual clearance due to the shape.

Is is bonded or screwed/bolted on?

I have no personal experience, but in all my years, every time the issue comes up with folks that know, they tell me this. Several body men, a friend that owns a 'Rod Shop', a friend that owns a speed shop, etc...

The scoop in that pic looks like an internal flange type, you glassed that to steel?

i'll agree with blown76mav (lonnie)on that one.i'm the one who bought the hood.not a crack, and the craftsmanship was excellent.not sure what it was bonded with, resin or some kind of epoxy, but whatever it was,it withstood the elements through the years.

    That's cool.
You don't hear to many success stories in bonding steel/fiber parts.
You must have done a bang up job.
I don't have enough confidence in my body skills to try it.
When a man that builds $80k rods for a living says "don't do it that way", I am the type to listen.
