Several people have been curious about shaved drip rails. I have just posted a few closeup shots to show what it looks like when the drip rails are gone. http://mmb.maverick.to/gallery/browseimages.php?c=8&userid=361 I also posted pictures of the roll cage built for me by AutoPower in San Diego, CA. They built the cage to be legal in NHRA, IHRA and SCCA competition. The goal of this car when completed is to be a daily driver with all the creature comforts. Air, sound deadener, insulation, fuel injection, automatic with overdrive, thumpin stereo, etc. It is also going to be used to teach my god-children how to drag race, autocross and road race. Hence the roll cage. The drive line is a 5.0 /AOD from an '89 Mustang. The engine is basiaclly stock with a mild Crower cam and a BBK SSI intake manifold. The rear is an 8" with 3.25 gears on a Powertrax No-slip differential. The plan is to run 4 wheel discs with a roll-control solenoid for drag racing. The paint scheme is rather simple. 2006 Volvo Electric Silver Metalic paint with a dark gray roll cage and a grey tweed interior. The dash has been move rearward by three inches to make it easier to reach the dash controls while strapped in. (the pictures were taken before the dash was moved.) A custom built console will house the stereo, heater/ac controls and several gauges. The stock gauge package will be replaced with a custom gauge insert. All the wiring will be replaced with a 21 circuit Painless wiring harness. This makes adding the door popers, power windows, etc. easier. This has been in the works for quite a while. Amazing how long it takes at the body shop when the shop is really busy. I traded a wrecked 70 Mustang for the body and paint work, so I can't complain too much. Tomas Hackman, I am really impressed with the pictures of the maverick that you posted recently. The body man who is working on my car has been after me to move the fuel filler to the side with parts from a car he has on the yard, an 89 Probe. Now I can't do it because everyone will think I am just copying you. We are looking at using a front valance from a '67 Mustang to achieve something similar (but not the same) as you have done. I want to run the Silver State Classic someday so I have to find some way to control the amount of air that tries to go UNDER the car at speed. That's all for now.
'Looks great. Now I gotta remove the drip rails when it comes time to painting mine..... and I don't care that 'everyone will think I'm just copying you' (no one person can orginate everything).
your pics look good. mine are shaved as well on the 72, but I'm not at the point I want to release any pics to the public yet, after its first coat of primer maybe(too many colors right now :16suspect ) body shops generally will take a huge amount of time, since they can make 10 times more money off quick in and out work versus, restoration/custom what have you . dont be afraid of copying tom, he stole most of his **** from me, at least all the good stuff(dont make me go into detail here tom:evilsmile ), the crappy ones were his own doing
Looks really slick. So do you still run any type of boomerang, or will it be strictly painted body now? Nice work.
another way of looking at this could be as follows, everthing that can be done to a car in the form of customizing, altering, changing, ectetera has been done in one form or another to some other platform, [i.e.rod,custom,racecar,sled,you name it] long before anyone even thought of building a maverick(by that, I mean Ford) so in essence, any of us that change or modify anything in an attempt to personailze our cars is copying someones work of the past, albeit, it may not be on the same platform, nor of the same style, but the modification itself has undoubtably been made to some other vehicle in one form or another. this has been going on as long as there has been cars and owners wanted a little something different than it came out of the box. so, if you like something youve seen, read about ,or heard of, by all means, if its something you want, dont worry about anyone saying you copyied so and so's car, because at one point in time, they were doing the same , ...maybe just applying it to a maverick instead of a ______ (you fill in the blank) its your car,...make it how "you" want it
Looks great! Where are you at in San Diego and where do you plan on racing at? I will be going drag racing at Qualcomm in a few weeks.
Thanks for the comments. I have seen many nice cars on this and other boards and have taken ideas from many of them to put together the picture that I have in my head. Shaved drip rails became a reality for me after I saw a picture of a customized green Maverick with this modification. The Shelby upper A-arm drop after I was told that it couldn't be done. (It can. ) Many of you on this board have contributed either parts or knowledge that will be used to complete this project. Thank you. There is still an incredible ammount of work to do before it hits the road. But I will be at the west coast mini-meet this spring with it. I will not be using any boomerangs, just paint. I never really liked all that crome on a car. Just seemed like too much "bling" for me. Also, finding a really nice set of boomerangs is a challenge these days. I live in Spring Valley and will be running it at the Barona 1/8th mile track. And autocross at Qualcomm stadium with either the local chapter of the SCCA or sometimes with the Porsch or Corvette clubs. I ran the timing lights for Race Legal at Qualcomm stadium for 3 years from '98 to 2001. At the time I was driving a '70 Mustang Fastback with a 429/C6. I miss those days. We would setup the track Saturday morning and start running by 10:30 A.M. and run until 11:00 P.M. Then we would still have 2 hours of track tear down before we could go home. Often we would leave the track setup until Sunday afternoon for our own "testing of the equipment". The other workers and I would often run through a full tank of gas an 1/8th mile at a time on Sunday morning. Talk about fun! Disclaimer: The opinions expressed here are just that, opinions. And we all know about opinions.... Your milage may vary.
Very nice, I like what you did with the boomerang area. I left mine in but they will be painted like Tammy's car. When you lowered the upper A arms did you have to modify the towers any?
nice clean looking car. maybe i'll get to see it sometime. we keep talking about making a trip to barona. got some work to do on mine before i make a trip anywhere though.
Yes. I had to cut notches in the lip along the very bottom of the shock tower . This picture should show it a little better. http://mmb.maverick.to/gallery/browseimages.php?c=8&userid=361
re: Street Cars It might be worth mentioning here that I seem to remember someone who did this on a street car and mentioned that rain WILL get into the car during a drive with the windows down just a crack. Dunno how that differs from today's vehicums but . food/thought
