Hey, I was wondering if the $30 B&M shift improver kit will actually make my car quicker down the strip. Anybody have any experience with this? Thanks, Jon
yes sir i do believe it will . but only marginaly. But the seat of the pants tells a different story. You will love it!
The B&M kit isn't my favorite for the C4. I like the Transgo kits...or you can do it yourself with a few household items for free, if you know what you're doing in the transmission. PM me for more info.
Well I already got the B&M ordered. I was just wondering if there would be any gains in performance and e.t. and what else the shift kit will improve.
Probably not much of a performance gain, but you will notice a slightly crisper shift from 1-2 and most likely a little bit of flare between 2-3, but it does shift better than "grandma's grocery getter" Last shift kit I "made" cost...what...the price of a pan gasket? I already had a cotter key to block the cutback valve. Best kit I've used yet. Most of the other "kits" do the same thing as well as increase line pressure slightly. B&M used to offer a kit called a "manual pack" that converted it over to a full manual valve body. A fellow on another board sent me some instructions for the now discontinued kit, and darned if I can find it. It wasn't hard to do...and could be done with simple hand tools, IIRC.
I hope B&M changed thier instructions, some yrs back they said to remove one of the separator plates & thatsWRONG, I like the trans go kits also. If you remove the foward drum & drill three hole evenly spaced around the band surface you will eliminate the third gear delay, be sure to counter sink the holes & debur. Basically there is a problem getting the fluid out of the clutches quickly this takes care of that.
Your one of the few ive ever met to like trans go kits If you want a full manual conversion buy a Fairbanks kit... a bit pricey but best kit I've ever used also. I put a B&M in a C6 in a 66 F-100 and liked it ALOT, but a Fairbanks in a 76 F-100 with a 302/C6 and it shifted harder than the 66 did with a 390 and 3.70 gears It had the option to make it a full conversion but I didnt do it as it was a driver
The transmission I have in my '72 has a shift kit of some sort in it. I love it. My car is just a daily driver with a 250 6 cylinder, and it works great. I have no idea what the trans was behind before I got it.
I did the "homemade" kit and got a HUGE flare between 2-3, and had to tighten the int. band down to 1 turn off to lose most of it. I have run it for quite a while like that with now apparent damage. It will slide the a$$ around if you gun it between 1-2 and I get a bit more slide (just a little) between 2-3. Well worth the hassle. I have a good time in it now. IF you got the B&M where you can set it up in a variety of different configs, I would do it the most high performance configuration, unless someone on here (who would likely be more knowledgeable with trannies) says not to...
Check this link out http://www.burly4x4.com/c4/c4buildup/ Buddy of mine did the stage 5 on his 2.3T C4 car and it will bark the tires with the little 4popper and it was free.
I did the STAGE 4 modification that is outlined in that Burly4X4 website. It does chirp into 3rd, and if I really gun it on a turn, I can do a "drift".
