I am about 200-300 rpm away from what I want at the big end with the 28 inchers in the back, so this winter I am thinking of purchasing some 26 inch tires..........is there any down side to the shorter tire? I am assuming there is not, but it does not hurt to ask.
Just like doing a gear swap. I spent all summer trying to find some 26" tires for my rig. I'm sure there's at least a tenth or two to be had there. The difference is close to going from 4.11 gears to 4.40 gears. here's a link with an mph calculator to mess with. http://www.f-body.org/gears/
Thats what I was figuring with the smaller tires After I did all my math, with my set-up a 4.33 gear seems to be what I need, but I really do not want to spent the $$$ on another set of gears and I need tires anyway . So I figured that(tires) would be my "gear swap". Just was wondering about the loss of sidewall height, as far as launching(tire wrinkle) and also stability loss at the big end with the smaller tire. Also if anyone has done this did they change air pressure very much from the bigger tire to the smaller. I know that what works for one might not work for another......just doing some checking. Thanks
i ran the mickey thompson et streets, 26x10.5x15, 25.8od and i shift at 5800. i go thru the traps at about 7000. 13 pounds of air. i changed to the et street drag radials 275/50r15, 26.1od and run them at 18. still experimenting with them. i also run 4.33 gears
Changing gears John, since the rearend is already out of the car I would rec changing gears. What is your setup, ?9 inch with spool? I have to change my gears this winter. We can do both at the same time. Call or E-mail, Ashton
Steven Moore (cometGT1974) runs 26" (by 10.5 I think) tires with great success. I wonder were he`s been lately?
Thanks guys.......I have a 9 incher ........aaah rear end I mean on the car its a 9 inch rear with 4.11's. Just in a delima.......I like the fender well full of tire, thats one of my reasons for not "really" wanting to go to the little tire...... I call you this week Ashton. Thanks.
Going to a shorter tire will likely hurt 60' ETs, which translates into a loss of ET later on as well (unless you can make it up downtrack). Shorter tires have less contact with the track than taller ones. That's why most of the 10.5 class cars have 31" or I think I have even seen 33"x10.5-15's. http://www.tysonracing.com/786.MOV true 28x10.5" tire....REALLY fast. 7.86/180 1/4.
