My experience with side pipes...These are the chrome ones with the shield around them from Patriot.

Got em from JEGS for a decent price.

Had local guy installed them, and he bunged them up backing off the lift.

They tended to hit the ground on speedbumps and other places where there were dips and bumps in the road.

I had to lose them when I got headers because the bends in the tube between header flange and inlet on side pipes would have had to be an S-bend, and nearly impossible to do with larger diameter pipe.

But I loved the look and they sound great, for a decent price.

That's why everyone should jack up their cars in the back! Looks great and it's useful. Add Cragars and the look of awesome is complete.

Honestly, if you touched it where the shield was, you could put your hand on it without burns. At least on the patriots models i used.

I wouldn't suggest touching the tip or especially the portion where it bends in front of the shield. It actually turned bluish there like on a motorcycle exhaust or nickelplated header tube.

Really? You guys got burned on the shields, or on the exposed pipe?

I specifically put my hand on them while hot to make sure my legs, wife's legs, dog, and my little nephew didn't get a burn from playing around in the car. It was always warm, but nowhere near hot enough to burn you, and you could leave your hand on it for over 20 seconds without hurting.

I wonder if my muffler guy put them on in a way that gave them more space between the shield and pipe than normal. I had about 1/2" or so gap....

There are 3 types of side pipes that I know of. One is what I will call the Brazilian pipe, which is not exposed except at the tip. The rest is covered by a fiberglass panel.

    No burn, of course.

Then Patriot makes two types, the shielded and "lake" pipe. The lake is unshielded, and I see them on Cobras, corvettes, etc, and they will burn you.

But the shielded shouldn't, unless I am missing something here. Like they are installed incorrectly or something.

I admit, I have burned my shin on the tip, but never on the shielded part.

I can't remember, like i said it was when i was five. but i remember the nice little white patch bordered with red on the back of my leg. they're shielded, they have a metal piece over them with a frickin' million little oval cutouts that make it look like some kind of uber-heavy-duty mesh. they're some nice pipes though. after we finishes his mustang, hopefully i get to help him fix up that biscayne.
