I just got my 302 rebuilt, I had a dead miss on No. 4, found the vac. line off at the modulator. Now on my first run it slips big time in high gear, will bearly pull itself. I have filled it and it shows full, The trannny worked o.k. before the tear down. I did install a edelbrock intake and carb. and am runnning the ford linkage for the kickdown, could it be part of the problem, any help appreciated. Thanks P.S. I sure will be glad when this thing is road ready.
Are you filling the tranny with the engine running and the tranny in Park? When you rebuilt it did you replace the piston seals on the clutch pack pistons? Did you install the rod between the vacuum modulator and the modulator valve in the case? Did you put the over pressure valve and spring in that is held in place with the filter? Is the linkage adjusted right? Does it operate in any range or gear?
I don't think he rebuilt the tranny, just the motor and used his existing c4 that was working ok before the engine rebuild. Hope he gives more info on the actual problem with shifting etc.
I did not fill the transmission while running. A couple quarts leaked out during the rebuild of the motor. It shifts eratically from 1st to second and is not smooth at all. When you hit the road it revs and will barely pull itself. If I drop it to second it takes off and pulls. Any help appreciated.
Do you have a vacuum gauge to determine how much vacuum you are pulling? Or, by putting your finger over a vacuum line, can you tell if your engine ... how do I word this... "sucks"? Just trying to rule out a vacuum leak somewhere. My (early) guess is the linkage adjustment though.
If you haven't already then fill it with the engine idling and the tranny in park. The oil will sit higher on the stick when the engine is not running. You need it running to get the right amount of oil in it. If you already did that then look at linkage adjustment. It runs in second, how about reverse and manual low?
It runs in manual low, manual second and reverse? The problem is that in "Drive" it slips - does it slip in drive right from the start or does it pull good in low, pulls good in second and then it starts slipping when it tries to go into third? If it slips in all gears when in drive it could be the oneway clutch is slipping or that it is worn out and it takes the added pressure that it gets when manually shifted to lock it up. The other thing is low oil level can cause the same symtoms. If you are sure that it is full of oil I would say it is ready for a rebuild. Before I say that I would check the linkage adjustment. With the engine off and the car jacked up and sitting on good stands place the shift lever in "drive". Disconnect the shifter linkage at the tranny and place the transmission shift lever in drive. Adjust your linkage to slip on to the lever without moving it at all. Tighten down the lock nut and check the operation with the car back down on the ground. If it still slips then you are going to have to either rebuild or replace the tranny.
