If you're considering a rear disc brake conversion, here's a couple of choices developed for early Mustangs and related Fords; 1. http://www.ultrastang.com/Ultrainfo.asp?Page_ID=17 2. http://www.ultrastang.com/Ultrainfo.asp?Page_ID=18 http://www.ultrastang.com/images/2006/sn95bracketkit.jpg www.ultrastang.com
15" or larger wheels will fit over the 10½" V6/GT version rear discs, and 16" or larger will fit over the 11.65" Cobra rear discs. www.ultrastang.com
wow thanks for the links how much is the bracket kit? and which kind of valve/master cylinder to use?
Hi Maverick75, The SN-95 V6/GT bracket version or the SN-95 Cobra bracket version is $150.00 which also includes the cost of shipping within the 48-states. http://www.ultrastang.com/images/2006/sn95bracketkit.jpg This is the MC I installed in a '65 Mustang fastback with the SN-95 V6/GT rear discs. The '65 had the stock 4-piston Kelsey/Hayes front discs, (and a power brake booster I installed from a '87-'93 2.3L Fox-body Mustang). http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/7765/v6gtsn95reardiscs0538gv.jpg This is the stock 4-wheel disc MC for a '94/'95 Mustang V6. Another possiblity is to use the '94 Cobra 4-wheel disc MC. Both of these MCs are ~7½" long from the mounting flange to the tip. Depending on whether you have a power brake booster or not, and depending on how thick the booster is, another MC I've used is the 4-wheel disc MC for a Lincoln Mk VII/Mustang SVO. This MC is ~ 8-1/8" long. http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/5390/mcfittingsspringwrap4oy.jpg I'm not exactly sure how much distance there is from the firewall to the back of the shock tower in the Maverick/Comet, but on a '65-'70 Mustang, you have a little over 14" distance in this area. For the early Mustangs, if the booster/MC is kept at a total combined overall length of 14", then it will fit within this space. You would have to measure on the Maverick/Comet to be sure how much distance you have, to determine what MC you could use. ...another 4-wheel disc MC possibility is to use the MC from a '67-'74 Corvette (ooohh! He said the "C"-word!).
Personally I am not fond of either of those brake set ups. Slides seize up on a regular basis and the internal parking brake mechanism unless used regularly tends to seize up as well. I think the Explorer Disc swap is the best overall choice. Parking brake is seperate from caliper and easily adapts to your currnet cables with minor welding. JMO but nice to see there are other options....
I think I may have seen this link on the forums somewheres, but maybe not... anyways, Steve, will this mod work for our Mavericks? http://www.ultrastang.com/Ultrainfo.asp?Page_ID=16
I have an '03 Mustang Mach 1 (Azure Blue/5-speed) that has been my daily driver for the last three years and 68,000 miles. The '03/'04 Machs have the very same brakes as the '01 Bullitts and '94-'04 Cobras. So far, I haven't had a minute's trouble with any caliper slide or parking mechanism seizures. www.ultrastang.com
I'm unsure on this. I don't know how much room you have on a Maverick/Comet between the firewall and the back of the driver's side shock tower. On an early Mustang you have about 14¼" between the firewall and shock tower, so you would have to keep the combined booster/MC length ~14" total to fit the early Mustangs. You would need to measure your Maverick to know how much distance you have there. www.ultrastang.com
I think Mavericks only have about 11" between the firewall and shock tower. How does the emergency brake work on the rear disc?
Wow. That's not a lot of room. Is this an actual measurement, or an estimation of the distance? On the Mk VII rear disc setup, all you do is use your existing drum brake cables to connect to the parking brake levers on the Mk VII's rear calipers. On the SN-95 V6/GT or SN-95 Cobra rear disc swap, you can either splice the SN-95 parking brake cables into the existing parking brake cable system, or you could use a custom Lokar cable setup. www.ultrastang.com
I did measure it once but this is going by memory, which aint the best. I will double check it today.
Thanks, Mavaholic. I would appreciate that. --Inquiring minds wanna know! Didn't some of the Mavericks/Comets come with factory power brake boosters? If that's all the room you have with a Maverick, a 5.0L Fox Mustang brake booster definitely wouldn't work. That style booster is ~6¼" thick. Most Ford MCs are ~7-3/8" long (Lincoln Mk VII MC --same as Mustang SVO MC, is 8-1/8" long). The Fox Mustang 2.3L booster is ~4¼" thick. With MC installed, that would put the overall booster/MC length at ~11-5/8". IF the Maverick/Comets had an optional factory booster, it would be best to install the stock-style brake booster, rather than trying to adapt a booster from something like the Fox Mustangs. www.ultrastang.com
