So what got you involved with Mavericks and what was your first? A year ago I had never heard of a Maverick, I had just got my taxes back and was looking for a second car, my friend said his uncle "had this old Maverick that hasnt been driven in 6 years, he'll probably let it go cheap". I went up and took a look at it, I wasnt going to buy it, but I figured its as close to a "muscle car"-type car I was going to get anytime soon...we talked and eventually got a selling price of $200. I had it bought and driven home a week later, and Ive had a lot of fun(and headaches) with it over the past year...but I dont regret buying it, me and my 4-year old son has had a lot of bonding time with that old car, and Ive met a lot of great people here because of it. So thanks to all of you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with the people just learning about these great cars, you guys are much appreciated and Im sure me, as well as a lot of other people, wouldnt have got no where near as far with our projects if it werent for you guys.
That sounds like my story. I couldn't find a 1965 Falcon to put my Cleveland in so I took a free 70 Maverick from a guy in my town. I have had it for 20 years now.
Car was given to me by my grandfather (the car's first owner) a while back. It had set up for a bit and needed a lot of work to be a reliable driver again, so I just let it set up also. Then gas went up and my only other vehicle, an old F150 w/ a 302 wasn't looking so attractive anymore. So.... I pulled the Mav out of storage, joined this site, and one by one worked through all its bugs, problems, and issues to make it a dependable driver again. Never coulda done that with out the help from this site!
i watched this car since i was a teen and then it was given to me by my best friend when he past away and now with allthe help from the great people on this site i will get it back to the street and strip where it belongs
i was saving up for something else and my dad called me up wondering how much i had cause he found me a car. Ive always liked the look of mavericks so i was excited about it. So i went and looked at it, had to save up another 100bucks. A week later i got my first maverick.
My dad had a '71 Comet GT that I was brought home from the hospital as a new born in, and grew up around it. He sold the car in 2001 and I never thought much about these cars after that. From late 2001 to early 2005, I pretty much forgot these cars existed... After I got my license, I decided I wanted an early 80's fox body Mustang, and started searching around for one. Then I came across an old photo album in the garage one night that had a ton of pictures of the '71 GT from over the years that we had it. All the memories came flooding back and I decided I'd rather have one of these cars. I searched on Google and found this board. I was looking for a Comet, but Hawkco on here had a '74 Grabber for sale and the price and location was right. I went to take a look at it, and fell in love with it on the spot. Everything about it reminded me so much of that Comet, the way the doors sounded when they opened and closed, the way the trunk sounded, everything. I knew that was my car. The car had been sitting for over 13 years when I got it. Took a couple of months, and a lot of help from this board to revive it, but at 17 years old I managed to do it. Brakes, fuel system, top end of the engine, everything myself. Unfortunately I only put 10,000 miles on the car before it got wrecked a few months later in November '05. Been working on it a lot recently though, and it should be back on the road by this fall.
loved the mavericks for years every time i looked they where to far away to much money or to much rust then last year i bought a pinto then jim e-mailed me about the pinto he needed it i didn't my friend said Sarah had one for sale looked at it said yes yes yes jim got his trifecta i got a maverick and a group of good people to talk cars to brad
It was the summer of '06 and I had an '84 Bonneville.. Now that car was fine for gettin around (305 with a rebuilt quadrajet, true duals with flowmsters, no cats, etc.) and had a pristine interior. I was sitting at home one day and my dad was like "Do you wanna go with me to check out a car, I'll need a ride if I don't buy it" So I was like "sure what kinda car" expecting to hear something lame when he said "a 71 Comet". Now, I had no idea what a Maverick or Comet was so he told me it was "like a baby Mustang" and at the time I wanted a 5.0 real bad, so I figured hey it's a Ford, what the hell. We drive to this Bronco garage/shop to go check the car out and I immediately fall in love with it. As soon as I saw it was a 4 door, I thought "chopped top, shaved handles and suicide the rears". So after checking it out, the car started up on the first crank and idled smooth. The guy running the place said a customer wanted a 302 and C4 so he bought the car through private party to swap 'em into a Bronco but then decided to go crate motor and didn't want it. After purchasing the car, we drove home and checked out all the paperwork that came with it. My dad gave the name on the slip a call and found out that he was the original and only, owner of the car up until about early 06 when his daughter didn't want it so he sold it to the Bronco guy. I traded my Bonneville to my dad for the Comet and I gotta say, that's probably the best decision I've ever made.
When I was a young man, I wanted a Mustang, but all I could afford was a Maverick. I call them the "poor man's Mustang". You could pick up a Mustang for a couple thousand at that time, but a Maverick was only a couple hundred. That, combined with the fact that they are lighter than a Stang, while being built on pretty much the same platform, and it was a no brainer. I find it funny how now the Maverick is becoming very popular and relatively expensive to work on. Back in my day, people threw away Maverick parts and working on them was dirt cheap. Even the parts that folks want to rape you on now, were cheap/free back then. Remember that they built more Mavericks than Mustangs up to that point. So they were everywhere. Now folks don't even know what they are.
I was in the navy, stationed at China lake California. My 64 T Bird was on its last leg.I needed a car, spotted an ad in a local paper for a V-8 stick 72 Mav.(I wanted another T Bird)Called the guy up...Checked it out...paid him 750.00 for it and the rest is history. That was 23 years ago.Drove cross country in it when I mustered out of the navy(my wife and I)Taught my wife to drive stick in it,taught my son to drive stick in it.I am currently doing a restification on it.I thought I knew a pretty fair amount about these cars, boy was I surprised when I discovered this forum!!!!(now I do know a fair amount)I have learned ALOT from the great people on this forum about more than just mavericks.I wouldnt get My mavs where I want them without this forum and the people who make it so great. :Handshake
My dad and uncle always had Mavericks so I grew up around them and it's now a family tradition to own a Mav
I was in the Navy, in 1972, and needed a good car after returning from a Med cruise. My Dad suggested a Maverick, which I hadn't considered before. I looked at and bought a Sprint, and have been hooked ever since. Just wish I still had that Sprint!
