Check behind the kick panels. Then under the center of the dash.

If you have a 73, remove the kick panels, and it should have the cut out for speaker under them, Cars with Am/FM radios had grills in the kick panel for the front speakers., Also Mavericks that came with just an AM radio, had one speaker in the dash, Like Frank said, Craig used a Mustang upgraded speaker. There should be a link on here somewhere.

there's definitely no grills on the kick panels but the radio that was in there was a am/fm with an 8 track..

But was it factory? If there are no speakers, I doubt it was. It's only am/fm form the factory, that would have them. They are not very common.

I would say most Mavericks had the radio added at the dealership, or at least had the AM radio removed and an AM/FM installed or whatever. So FACTORY front speaker kick panels would be rare.

If you can find the kick panels you can always add the holes like I did. Just a little trimming of the metal and I fit a pair of 6.5's in there pretty easily. They can't be too deep, but you can still fit something reasonably sized. Could also modify regular kick panels of course. That's about the only place I can think of to put two speakers in the front. Craig's 2-way center-mound dash speaker is an option. Forget about putting speakers in the doors, as far as I know. I don't see a way...

Anyone have a picture of factory kick panels with speakers? Did they all have grilles or only some? EDIT: Here's a picture of mine. I never knew if the holes were factory, but I didn't like them. So i ended up putting some grilles off a Jeep. This was the test picture i took when I was fitting them, they look better in the car though. You can't see the blue behind the grille. [IMG]

I picked up a couple of sets of these grills fron Ebay in different colors. I know that Mustang II and Torino are the same grills and I'm sure more car models match. They are all over Ebay at good prices.

Yeah, they just clip in. I'm sure it's one of those parts that dealers ordered, but never used, and it probably crossed over to many models.

the old radio did have some wires going from the radio up into the dash and the wiring diagram on the back said right/ left front for those wires. although it looked like someone else put the wires in a long time ago
