not sure what it could be, the tach was already on there when i bought the maverick. it looks like its hooked up from what i can tell, theres three wires going into the steering column.

    any tips where to start?

also, when looking under the dash i found those two wires not hooked to anything, anyone know what theyre for?

All I can really tell you is that the wires hanging under your dash have nothing to do with the tach.

    Tach:

Red wire goes to switched 12V power source.
    Black wire goes to ground.
Green wire goes to negative side of the coil.
There should be a third wire for the back light. A lot of times it's white.

    Speedometer:

Either the cable is broke, or not hooked up to the back of the gauge cluster. If neither of those are the problem, you need to pull the cable loose from the transmission and check the gear on it.

thanks, i actually just finished hooking up the tach right before i read your post. any suggestions on where to wire the back light in?

i just checked the back of the cluster and it looks like the speedometer cable is hooked in so the tranny is next.

Look for a blue wire with a red stripe somewhere around the back of the radio. Check to see that it has power when you turn the head lights on. Hook the back light to that.

You will probably have to put the car on ramps or jack stands so you can get underneath to check the tranny gear. It has one bolt holding a horseshoe shaped clip that holds the gear in place. Take off the clip and pull the cable and gear straight out.
