I was thinking of upgrading the backlights and while I'm in there was thinking of changing out my speedo cable sents I get the "jumpy" needle thing once in a while. So can the inner cable be pulled out of the sleeve or do I have to cut a end off and pull it out? I was thinking of getting on of those universal speedo cables.
With only dealing with the driven gear end of the cable, I was thinking that once I remove the gear and disconnect it from the speedo and I pull the inner cable out through the inside of the car? am I correct in this assumption? thank you.

You have to disconnect it at the speedometer to pull the cable out - after you remove the gear - I think.

You don't have to remove the gear. The insert can be pulled through the speedometer side. But usually the sleeve will have a worn spot that catches the cable and that's what usually causes the needle wobble.

The wabble doesn't happen very often, and usually when it's really cold. Would a new inner cable fix this? Now hearing about the wearing sleeve posibility, I'm kinda woundering what would be the best course of action... I can think of three options, 1. Lube existing cable, 2. replace inner cable w/ universal, 3. replace whole cable with a specific replacement part... What do you think? thank you.

I would suggest taking the inner cable out, carefully clean and then lube it with speedometer cable lube. You can get this at most auto parts stores. Also lube the speedometer head itself,a little difficult, but while you have the cable off it's not too bad. You'll have to clean the part that turns with a q-tip and brake cleaner. Take your time and try to remove as much of the old crud as possible. You should spin the part by hand and gently pull it in and out at the same time. Try to get in where the shaft spins in the housing. After that do the same thing with the speedometer grease on a q-tip. Again take your time and try and get the grease worked into where the shaft spins in the housing. This should fix it,unless the cable is frayed or worn out. I'd try this before replacing anything. The original grease dries out and will make the speedometer needle jump back and forth. Good luck! It fixed mine right up!:)

from what ive seen on about 90% of vehicles out there no one changes the speedometer gear to match their tire size. ive always recommended a GPS for one you get true speed as you have slippage at the wheels and you now have a GPS. Magellan is the only brand i can truly recommend but the tom toms are pretty cheap. If youre in a city with large buildings everywhere dont go cheap on your GPS, you will get something called multipath and the GPS will jump you over a block or 2. another route is to buy a little laptop accer makes a very small one thats only like 250 bucks a gps dongle about 30 bucks and you know have navigation and a computer in your car. endless possibilities at that point
