I used a coil spring compressor from Autozone about 3 days ago when I did my UCAs and all that. Worked just fine but make sure the hooks are mounted correctly and the coil sits in the provisions on the bottom fork.

As an alternative, you could buy one of these. I got roller spring saddles from this seller and the quality was pretty nice:

I used this one and it worked perfect.

I rented one from AutoZone back in the early 90's and decided to let them keep the $25 deposit.

That is still a good price for the tool. I removed/installed about 20 springs in the last 10 years. Sometimes I carry it to the junkyard and get spring perches off 60-63 Falcon/Comets...they have the roller style perches, not rubber.

I borrowed one from the local oreilly and from the autozone, and both were junk. They were never lubed, had stripped threads, etc. So I bought my own from somewhere, maybe ebay?, lubed it up with 30 weight, and it has worked flawlessly. I will be needing it again, because I need to cut a coil or more off my springs to bring my car down to ride height.

I had a difficult time with the one pictured above, because that duck-bill kept getting in the way of other components as I tried to fit the spring into the perches.

    I prefer the 4-hook model.

Never Seez is better than oil. It has graphite which prevents metal to metal wear.

I used mine in a different manor. I put the "duck-bill" on top of the shock tower and the hooks as far down as they would reach on the spring and worked fine.

I might buy one for future use but I have to admit, handling a fully compressed spring is a scary thing!

I got the same autozone tool and it has worked several times perfectly. but like mad goon said it is kinda scary to move a compressed spring around. I usually put it way away from me so if it does pop open it pops where it wont hit me when Im not looking.

I always run a chain and hook through the spring...better than having to go look for the spring in the next neighborhood if it did get away.

1.) Using it this way meant - U had to fully decompress the spring?
2.) Was'nt sure it was possible to remove the spring in a decompressed state?
