Having a problem with started squeling for approx. 10 seconds after start up. After 10 secs the noise goes away. I bought a starter for a 71 V-8 car. I have an early c4 transmission.

    Any help.

Check your fan belt might be loose. If the sound is coming from the starter than you have a bad starter replace it again. Sometimes the rebuilts are not that good.

It sounds like the starter is not disengaging or at least not as fast as it should. Get under there and look at the clearances between the starter and flywheel. Check that you are not getting feed-back power to the solenoid from the ignition circuit. Make sure you have the right flywheel and bellhousing matched up.

I believe Paul is going to be right no this one. I used to rebuild these starters for a living back in the 70's & 80's. Sometimes on a rebuilt starter the rebuilder may put an armature in the starter with a worn out groove just above the starter drive. There is a half moon keeper that snaps onto the end of the shaft in this groove just inside where the nose bushing is. Once you hit the starter a time or two, the keeper pops off and then allows the armature to slide back and forth in the starter while the engine is running...allowing the starter drive to be rubbing against the flywheel. It eventually slides back in place and the noise goes away till you start it again. I have seen this happen many times and it sounds like what you are describing. If this turns out to be the problem, don't try to fix it...replace the starter. Good luck...and let us know how you come out.
