having a small issue, my starter cranks after key is released, i replaced solenoid and its still doing it, if i tap on the solenoid it stops, did i get a bad one? or is it something else? and second question, what is the best place to tap in for ignition voltage to run a relay? and on a good note, i jumped the solenoid and took the mav around the block for the first time this year
Insufficient voltage to the solinoid will cause problem.(check the cables) As for the relays...From the battery (through a fuse of course) is the best way to run a relay...good luck!!!
i have also had this happen to me it turned out to be a bad ignition module. i'd bump the switch over and starter would keep going til i got under the hood to disconnect the wire to the solenoid. car would still run great to.
i understand how to run a relay, but i'm looking for a source that will be only active when ignition is placed in on/crank position i don't get how low voltage at the solenoid will make the solenoid not disengage, specially if i tap the solenoid and it stops doing that by ignition module do you mean the ignition switch?
The solinoid is an electro magnet. When tripped (charged) it closes a high amp circuit which makes the starter spin. When there isnt enough current flowing to the coil inside the solinoid,it cant build enough of a magnetic field to trip the switch properly and it will hang opened or closed causing the starter to not turn or turn continuously.A key on 12 volt ignition source will suffice for your relay needs.Use a source that doesnt have alot of accessories on it.There should be a key on 12 volt lug in your fuse box.Get out your circuit tester and go hunting!!!
you can figure out if this is your problem by jumping a wire from your battery + to the s terminal on the solenoid, and see if it still sticks. make sure your car is in park, and i would leave the ignition switch off, so the starter doesn't grind on the flywheel if it does stick.
update: went to murray's and exchanged my solenoid, plugged it in, no more running starter i don't have duraspark anymore thats why i was bit confused
