Great thanks! Nothing happened, just rebuilding the front end. Don't want a 37 year old box @ 140mph +.... Comparing cost vs a rear steer rack & pinion..
There's a place here in Seattle that does excellent gear box rebuild work. They're called Red Head; they quoted me two hundred for a rebuild. They said they can also increase your steering gear ratio, but I'm not sure how much that runs. Website is: http://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/
id have to say if your goin to spend the money to go 140+ mph 9 sec car , you might as well go with rack and pinion , maybe just go for m2 , help with header slection also , but once again just my eddie
There is a rebuild company in Santee by the airport. I will drive by tomorrow and get you the address, phone number and a quote. Auto Krafters offers rebuilt boxes as well. A rebuilt box cost is usually $200+. I have seen them for as much as $350. A rack and pinion conversion is at least $1000 if you buy a pre-engineered kit. Figure probably at least that if you do it yourself and have to re-design your setup more than once. Little things like universal joints, Double-D hardened shafts, various tie ros ends, etc add up quick. Mustang II kits are between $1300 and up depending on what parts you can get used, donated, etc. This does not include installation costs.
Thanks Jay...I really appreciate it.... Both the answers and the explaination in oh so nice terms...lol
If you're up to it, you can rebuild your box yourself. It is actually pretty easy. I've rebuilt two boxes, all the bearings and the bottom seal came from a local bearing supply and the upper seal came from a gearbox rebuilder up north. I can't remember the name of the place, but I have another post on it somewhere. All can be done $30 - $50. Also, there has been alot of discussion about what lubricant to use in them. Some guys here use grease. I used heavy weight oil. The shop I talked to uses a heavy weight oil and grease mixed together to make a "really light" grease. I'm not sure what the factory originally used.
