I understand the difference in ratios between power steering and manual steering {1972}. But what is the difference between power steering delete, or taking the power steering belt off, or if it leaks and has no fluid?
just taking the belt off you are still having to steer the cyl. in and out. delete...is the correct and cleaner looking way...
Nothing is as dangerous as starting up a car with the power steering pump lines to the cylinder hooked up backwards. If you have experienced this, you know what I am talking about!!
Thanks for the response. My control valve is trash and I'm thinking of swapping in manual steering out of my 70 parts car. Is there a difference between power steering delete and the manual steering besides the ratio. is one harder to turn when you are parking for instance, and do you still feel the road the same.
You can get an adapter that goes in place of the control valve. I dont think that you will be able to feel much difference between a manual and power steering gearbox. I have driven cars both ways and its no big difference parking lots are the hardest part Here is a link to the first one I came across doing a search I know you can find them cheaper from other sources. https://autokrafters.com/p-10348-power-to-manual-steering-control-valve-eliminator-66-67-fl-fa.aspx
If your manual steer parts car has good tie rods, idler and pitman arm, that'd be the way I'd go for a conversion... Can always use tie rods from the P/S setup(that is assuming it's true '70 & not a 1969½)..
what is the difference between the 69.5 and the 1970. I pulled the vinyl door panels off and they were made on oct 14 1969 and then shipped to ford. I have a hard time reading the vin number and the tag by the door is unreadable. I pulled the fuel tank, and I know it is at least a 1970.
I am currently running the power steering box without assist. At any speed over 10 mph, the road feel is great. At low speed, the steering is heavy and you better have some shoulders. I had a Grant steering wheel that was an inch smaller in diameter. Just switched to a factory Sport wheel and think that extra diameter is going to be a significant change in leverage. My first Comet was a full manual setup. It took forever to go lock-to-lock. I would not go to that again by choice. Too light of a feel. I could be tempted to go to the new Borgeson power steering conversion if the funds were there, but being that you just need the adapter and have all that other stuff now, give that a go.
Thanks for the info.I will probably go with the power steering delete, more money but less work. Funny how that usually works that way.
If you keep the original sector you have the P/S ratio but with manual linkage... This is probably the best setup, never been thrilled with the adapter...
It's not that hard to rebuild. Control valve. I did mine a couple weeks ago on my 70 Mustang. Kit was only about $20 or $30 bucks from Advance. My car steers like new now. - Matt
Are you saying that I don't need the power steering delete if I swap in the 1970 Manual linkage to the 1972 power box.I'm a bit confused. I have a 72 four door parts car with what appears to be a intact power setup. do I need any parts off of that or just use the manual parts. I just don't like the feel of the power steering. I have a 63 International Scout. I can't believe it would be harder to steer than that.
