I have a question regarding the correct color of the wheels on this '73 Grabber we are doing. When finished the car will have the stock steel wheels with the trim rings and moony hub caps. Should the wheels be painted the color of the car or should they be black?
I would say black. I have seen factory body painted rims on LDO cars (mine was one of them). All the rest have been black.
The stock rims on my brother's old (Don Graham has it now) 73 2 door were body color. It wasn't a Grabber, though.
Black or body color? Now I am confused. Here's the problem. Only two of the rims on the car appear to be the stock rims, but they are so rusty there is no way to tell what color they used to be. The car has no spare tire so that rules that out. The owner thinks they should be the color of the car's body, which in this case would be dark green metallic. I know he wants the car to look as stock as possible, but neither of us is 100% sure about the rim color. Here's something to think about. The entire bottom of the car is a satin black. Would'nt the rims be black also? I have no idea.
My 73 Grabber has the trim rings & hubcaps, and the rims are black, since it was from California there is very little rust on them, so I would think there the factory wheels, my 74 Grabber also had black steel wheels.
Well, the decision has been made and the rims will be painted black. Once the trim rings and hub caps go on not much of the rims will be visable anyway. Thanks for your help guys. We've been working our butts off on this car for the past few weeks and it's getting pretty close to the end. The car is all painted now and it's owner will be seeing it with it's new paint and stripes for the first time this Thursday. I think he'll be happy with it.
OK. Here's a few pics of the Grabber. It's kind of hard to get good pics in our shop because I can't far enough away from the car to fit it in the camera's view finder. I got the inside of the trunk sprayed with trunk splatter paint today and I'll spray the clear sealer over that tommorow. Then the trunk lid can go back on and the rear parking lights, bumper and the tail lights can go on. The car still needs a little buffing here and there. Once that's all wrapped up and the chrome is back on, then we can start on the interior. First thing on that list is installing the headliner. Oh happy day!
woooo, nice job!!!, the headliner isn't as bad as everyone thinks, it's the sides at the back that can be tricky.
Thanks Dave. Oh, BTW, the measurements you posted for the Grabber stencil were right on. Thanks again. We're getting pretty good at installing headliners in Mavericks. Just a whole lot of pulling and stretching and stretching and pulling. I just hope this one goes in better than the one in our red and white Maverick. That one has a few wrinkles in it that are going to be a bear to get out, if we can get them out. After much pulling and stretching we discovered that one of the panels was not sewn in perfectly straight. The wrinkles are not real bad, but they still bug me. Since it's my car I can live with it, but I don't want that to happen to a customer's car.
