OK, so i have this wild hair up my rear today, i have been gathering and spending on my mav motor like crazy, as she sits...this is what im rockin. tell me what u think. Scat Forged 3.125 Crank and 5.4 Forged i-beam rods keith black Forged..of course 10:1 slugs. floating pins have a rpm airgap, crane ign system. holley 600 jetted to a 750, full 20lb NX 125 shot, proform 1.7 roller rockas and a few other goodies, o its all in a mexican block thats been prepped for .30 over and roller cam. OK... heres my delimma. ive been slowly gathering all this stuff for the mav, but im still lackin, main stud girdle, lifter vally girdle, approved dampner, Afr 185's, getting it balanced, well like another 2500 bucks or so to go. but ive been playing on here alot, getting.....u know.......maverick fever! I wanna drive my car so flippin bad! i dont want to put it together with all the stuff i have now and have to tear it all apart again. so ive come up with a little idea. here's where i need help......... should i... get a cheapo stocker 302 to throw in er' so i can drive her again maybe even do a couple bolt on's???? or should i be "patient" and wait till i can afford to drop 3k in my fast motor and be done w it........which may take AWHILE. please help me decide!!!!!
Considering how easy it is to drop a powerplant into these old things. I say drive it!!! Put a used 302 in it and drive. Take your time and build your motor right. Gather up all your parts and do your drivetrain swap when your ready.
Yep, I agree totally. Find you a decent running used 302 on the cheap, spend a weekend putting it in, and cruise.
If it were me, I would pick up a cheap 5.0 from a Mustang. Drop the Airgap and nitrous on it and have some fun. You will still have the kick in the pants as these motors are no slouch and you will have the opportunity to play with it (and learn) while you build the monster motor.
you cant change the cfm of a carb by rejeting it. i would put the short block togther. get the girdel for the bottom end if you feel you need it. then put stock heads on top of it and go play. its easy enough to change out heads in the car.
I only want to comment on the stud girdle, If you plan on running the STUD girdle and not a BOLT girdle then you will need to have the line bore checked with the STUD girdle in place and bolted down. From your post it seems to me you are finished with the machine work. The studs on the girdle can change the line bore on the mains. We have one car with a BOLT girdle on a stock block that makes about 600 HP and have had no problems. So some will say a STUD girdle is overkill, But to each his own.
Ever hear the term "Stang Bangers" ... That refers to guys that take Fox body Mustangs and fog the poop out of stock 5.0s with nitrous, run them on the edge until they pop ... then throw another junkyard bullet in there, one after another ... Cheap strategy ...
put a good used 302 in her and go out and have some fun. Build ur race motor without rushing. when rushed, humans sometimes make mistakes.TTFN Ron
LOL,, what everyone else said. that will also help you track down any little kinks for when the big ponies are in there...
it has different venturis too! My reason for not jus slappin it together like it is, is my previous maverick. I spent alot of money doing a decent rebuild, 351w lightning heads and cam. then the enitre time i had it, i wanted more....inotherwords,,, i had alot of regrets. so my new car has been so dubbed "no regrets" so my hardcore motor will be right the first time by my eyes. and prolly left loose for a t40e/ t3/t4 turbonetics turbo i have laying around. there is much machine work to be done, line bored, roller cam bearings installed, 1 piece rear seal modding, etc!! so stud girdle is not an issue thinking about modding for screwin block plugs too. im liking the ideas about used stang motors though... i was thinkin... i have a stall converter, shift plate and manual valve body i could play w too! i went to pull a part today to get a throttle body for my 94 gt and found a 93 cougar xr7( think thats what it is ) with pretty my the same motor as my stang, wrecked so id have to bring a cordless sawzall
are the venturis changed to something like down leg venturis or was the whole center body replaced or bored out. im curious as to how to do this.
I think you need to sit down to a nice 12 pack of beer, ponder with your thoughts a bit, then........ throw in yer niffty temporary 302, then spend the time and the money and build the engine you want. In the end when you put in your dream engine in your mighty Maverick at the end of the day you will be as happy as a pig in $heeeet that you took your time.
