Soleniod sticking? Maybe you have the wrong starter that sticks too far into the bellhousing.

How do you have it wired? a mini starter will do that if the solenoid is not isolated since they are a permanent magnet motor.

Do you have the big 302 starter with one connection or the small 5.0 mini starter with the solenoid on it?

If it stays running the like Joe said it might have the wrong wire connected to the "S" terminal on the solenoid keeping it energized.

Red with blue trace should be connected to the "S" terminal on the starter Solenoid. The Brown wire or Red with green to the "I" terminal on the solenoid.

Did you use the starter that was on the engine and transmission? or did you actually change it to the older style?

A 91 would come with what everyone refers to as a mini starter, the solenoid is on the starter.

Looking in the catalog here the 91 mustang still had the big starter, the PMGR mini starter came out in 92.

The Mavericks Red w/blue trace wire should be the only wire connected to the S terminal or small connection on the 91 Solenoid. You might want to replace the solenoid with the older version so you can connect the other small ignition wire.
