Anyone here try to put a T5 into a '70 Maverick with the smaller trans tunnel? Or better yet, how does the size of the T5 compare to a C4? Thanks to the member das351965, I have all the info I could ever need as far as the clutch cable and everything is concerned. He has completed the swap in a '71 Maverick and parked it next to me at Fun Ford earlyer this year. Just a matter of cramming the T5 into my '69.5 now...
Yep, every '70 I've seen had the smaller transmission tunnel. Guess I'll grab a T5 for 50 bucks at the junkyard and see what I can do.
Yea, I was driving around I-285 in my '72 Saturday afternoon comeing back from Terry's. The traffic on I-285 is generally around 75-80 mph (that is, when it's not grid lock traffic). The '72 likes to cruise at 65-70 mph. To keep up with traffic, I had to run it just hard enough to start knocking my gas mileage down. I turned the radio down for a minute and was listening to how hard the motor was turning at 75 mph, and I thought to myself, if I could grab one more gear right now and drop my RPM down, it would be the greatest thing ever. With a 200, T5, electric fan on the radiator, and good powerful ignition, I should be able to get some gas mileage out of this thing, and still keep up with traffic just fine. But I'm putting the 200 in with a C4 first just to kind of get a comparison of how much less power it makes then the 250. If I'm not happy with it, I'll get the full T5 with bell housing and all out of a '88-'93 5.0 Mustang and bolt it behind Dan Hines' old 250 and drop it in.
The catch is, you have no idea what condition the transmission is in. But there is one there right now in a '92 4 cylinder notch back Mustang that seems promising. I'm going to go pull it out tomarrow morning. I was going to put an AOD in the '69.5 out of a Lincoln Town Car, but Earl told me that ain't going to happen with the smaller trans tunnel. Plus the more I think about it, an AOD is just more things to go wrong vs. a T5, not to mention the extra power it takes to turn it..
Another problem you may encounter is the little 200 might not have the torque to sustain higher speeds especially up inclines.
Yea, I'm kind of wondering about that. Right now I already have the 200 and C4 trans from my '76 parts car bolted together using a bell housing out of a '66 Mustang that was one of the only things in my uncles house when it burned down that is still useful afterwords. I'll go ahead and get the car running and on the road with the 200/C4 and get it registered and everything and see what it's like. If it's crappy, the 250 is sitting there waiting. Although I'm going to have to get a torque converter and flex plate to use it, unless I just run the 200 until I have everything to swap the 250 and T5 in at the same time.. We'll see. Geeze, all this is makeing my head hurt.
Forget the 4 cyl T5. I'm told the input shaft is to different to modify and the case bolt pattern will not work. I just put a T5 in a '63 Ranchero/Falcon and I don't think the tunnel is any larger that an early Maverick. Fits just fine. I had a WC T5 made up with the 6 cyl. ratios and input shaft with the area that goes into the pilot bearing turned down to match. First gear is lower then on the V8 trans and the bearings are beefier. It cost me $700 for a rebuilt trans and wow what a difference it made in the 'Chero with a 200. I have a 2.7 rear gear and the new 5 speed allows me to burn rubber. Still sorting the carb, but it is a night and day differance from the stock 3 spd. I used a stock early E-Van bellhousing and late 4 cyl. Mustang clutch with stock Pressure plate, flywheel, 8 1/2" clutch, clutch arm and Z bar. For the 6 cyl info on this go to: http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=793
Good info. None of the links in the Ford Six link work though. If I go with the 250 engine, I think I'm just going to get a full transmission from the bellhousing back out of a '87-'93 5.0 Mustang. This is what several other people have reccomended. I can get one with plenty of life left in it from MPS for a pretty reasonable price. And their just up the interstate from me. I have heard nothing but great things from people running the 6 cylinder/T5 setup. Makes me want to do it just that much more.
Is MPS the place out on 316? I saw some kind of Mustang place over there a while back when I was going to Dacula to unload at Weyerhauser Dist Center.
Theres a couple of Mustang places off of 316. You can get to MPS from 316 or I-85 North. The other place is just off of 316 also and just recently put a new flywheel and starter in my dad's '95 GT, but for the life of me I can't remember the name right now. My dad has been going to all of them for years, all the guys know him when he walks in. Always bitter sweet going to MPS. All those awesome Mustangs there that are destroyed, but yet I can only imagine what kind of awesome Maverick could be built with some of those parts. If you're ever around the Suwanee, Lawrenceville, Duluth, Norcross, Cumming or Buford area, let me know.
