well, first the transmission I have already has the bellhousing installed and I can't get the bolts off so when I get around to installing it I can install the bell first which assume makes things easier than installing bell/trans as a unit from under the car... I'll probably take it to a shop and have it removed or something... I tried a breaker bar, rachet, electric impact wrench... the first two I kept rolling the trans in my garage. the impact wrench didn't do squat. Second, I tried to install the alignment pins into the flywheel I picked up awhile back and can't get them to seat properly... can't get the stepped part flat with the flywheel surface, it's about a 1/16" up and thats with resorting to using a 3lbs mallet... now the tips are showing stress fractures so I probably jacked them up... I might have to take it to a shop and have the current ones removed and have them install new ones... any advice, should the dowel pins go in fairly easy, should they be pressed in or hammered? can the trans/bell be installed as a unit? why doesn't anyone sell the dowel pins by them selves! can they be removed by just hammering them out of behind with a punch? I can't find a affordable, decent (knows as much as or more than I do) mechanic anywere in my area (az, maricopa to phoenix metro area)... thanks.
Dissimilar metal corrosion cased the steel bolts to weld themseves to the aluminum bell housing. Some penetrating oil such as PB Blaster or Kroil a good soak(Day or so) and a good wrap with a hammer on the bolt head along with a real impact wrench should do the trick. As for the fly wheel. The dowels are pressed in.Knock the old ones out They are done.Get new ones...put the flywheel out in the hot sun for a day and new dowels in the freezer for the day. After it all gets a good soak in the heat/cold.Use a brass drift/dead blow hammer to seat the new dowels in place.
I'll try that with the next set of dowel pins I get... Is there any way to get the dowel pins by them selves? The ones I tried to install were from a bolt kit I didn't need so I payed around $15 for 6 bolts I didn't neven need and 3 dowel pins I probably ruined... my flywheel uses the 5/16" bolts it's a aftermarket steel one. should they be fairly easy to install or do you really have to whack on them? thanks.
