I'm currently looking at trading a C4 for a T5 with a broken 2nd gear. He is including the clutch, pressure plate, bellhousing, and flywheel. How hard is it to replace the 2nd gear? Is it doable w/o any special tools or knowledge?

    Thanks,
    Ford Guy

Get the rebuild video from Hanlon motorsports. Last trans that some guy said "just second gear" was 2nd,3rd,and a rebuild syncro kit=300 bucks. You wont know what it needs till you have it disassembled and see. Hanlon can supply all parts, great people to work with.

Also remember the flywheel is probably a 50 oz.

So do you think I should not go through with this, considering I'm not 100% sure what's wrong with it?

Did you get it cheap???if so,putting 300 bucks in a tranny that wont cost you over 700 bucks when done is a fair deal.

2nd gear could be more than just a 1 gear fix. The clutch slider that engages 2nd also is used in reverse and first. My experience with the T5s is, If you are going into the trans ( we are talking about street duty only) its best to replace 2nd and 3rd, these are the two gears that give the most problems. You also need to put the syrnco kit and the small parts kit. Also to note don't mess with the NON world class transmission, They are the weakest. Another note is the t5 is a picky putting together trans, Watch the shift dogs on assembly. I don't know what your plans for the trans is, But in the cars around here (mostly Mustangs) they WILL NOT hold at the track with sticky tires. I just sold a pile of scrapped t5s that was tried to be used for track duty. Also keep in mine there is about 4 different versions of this trans. with the non world class being the weakest, to the HD T5 being the strongest. On a side note for all the T5 lovers, I have put the BILLETT gear sets in the T5 this does double the strength of the trans., But not worth the expense in my opinion.

In a manual transmission, any time you have a gear go bad it usually takes out the cluster gear as well. If you can't inspect the tranny and get the numbers from it to check out what it is and came from don't buy it unless the source is familiar to you. There are too many things that can be expensive to fix. If you are unfamiliar with repairs to maunal transmissions you might get a tranny from a four cylinder car that isn't worth running with your engine. There are several versions of the T5 and not all are strong enough for a V-8.
