Ok guys, where did I mess up? The flywheel I ordered is a 28oz 157 tooth for this 302. It measures the exact size and tooth count as the 250 flywheel.

The problem is, I cannot get the 250 TC converter to mount to it. Not only is the flywheel to thick to even get the TC studs to pass through, but the holes in the flywheel dont even match the TC converter studs.

What do I need to do? Pic attached.

See I always thought "flex plate" was the same as a flywheel. Now I see its not. I feel like an idiot lol. Now I know.

So before I mess up again. The trans is out of a 72 maverick...250. So I need to order a flex plate for a 302 157 tooth correct? And this will ensure the 250 converter will bolt up? Thanks and I now think ill go drink some beer. Was really wanting to get this together tonight lol

You need a 250 flex plate with a 250 engine...or 302 flex plate with a 302. The 250 is internal balanced so the flex plate is zero imbalance, the 302 is external balanced and has a 28 oz imbalance flex plate.

You can always take both Flywheel and Flex Plate to a machine shop and they can rebalance your 250 Flex Plate to match your 28oz Flywheel, they need both so to make sure weight is correctly matched to bolt pattern. As you are aware, Flywheel/Flex Plate bolt pattern is matched to crank, so can only go on one way...........
Do not know if cheaper to buy new/used Flex Plate or rebalance, but at least you have couple of options.

Well it looks like you have the correct motor plate for an automatic at least. Just get the right stuff for your installation maybe get a slightly higher than stock rpm torque converter. Put some thread sealant on the bolts that hold the flex plate on as to avoid an oil leak .
