Hi All, As part of prepping the Comet for everyday use we want to install a temp gauge. Idiot light just tells you when it is already too late. No, not one of those three way things, oil and amp reading not needed. Looking for a mechanical one. Any ideas? I noticed that there is a sensor on the front of the engine that apparently was used to switch vacuum advance on and off as part of some somg stuff. I would assume one could replace that thermo switch with the sensor for the temp gauge. Anybody done this? Oh, engine is 250 six. What should be the correct thermostat? The car is going to be used for short trips mostly so I would think that a higher temp thermostat would be better, getting some needed hot water into the heater core so that the defroster could work sooner in the morning. So a 195 might be preferred to a 180? As part of the cooling system service we are going to replace all the hoses, back flush, etc. Maybe change out the water pump while we are at it. Any special hints? I know about the toxicitity of the antifreeze so will keep the pets indoors. karguyz
if i was you i would go with a electric gauge, i've had bad experience with mechanical gauges as to kinking hoses and once that happens the whole gauge is scrap. i know some people swear by them and they may be a little more accurate, but when you oil pressure gauge hose brakes in side your car your going to think twice about doing that again. as for the thermostat i'd go with the 195.
Antifreeze is toxic to pets ? Someone didn't tell some of the dogs around here then. Didn't faze em one bit either.
They just did not drink much of it then. It is supposed to be a very painful death. You are doing the right thing keeping your pets away from it. I have run the electric gauges and really can't say they are any less accurate than the mech. ones. We are not working on Nuclear Safety Related stuff so if the gauge is on 1 or 2% I doubt it will melt down. lol I do use a Mech. oil pressure gauge on my F100 because that is what I could find at the time but I did buy the copper line and use it instead of the plastic one. I feel a little better about that. As far as the temp. to use I have always heard 195 was better for the engine than the lower temps. clint
