I have a nice set up for my 302 but the bug has bite me & I need more power. I have a choice on heads but I would like to know from people that race for good ideas. 1 choice is RHS heads 180cc $900 2 choice is Edelbrock RPM with the 170cc with the smaller 1.90 valves $1000 3 choice is Trick Flow Twisted Wedge 170cc $1150 4 choice is AFR 165 $1300 5 choice is Brodix 5 0 or Track 1 $1300 (I think the 5 0 might be the better for my setup. I have a Holley 600, Air gap intake, a roller cam 230-236 duration & .513-.530 lift, 3.55 gears, oh yeah I have iron GT40 heads at this point. The stock crank but better rods & pistons. Or just add a Procharger & a new blower carb & also keep the psi down around 8-10.
i have always liked AFR , i know they are about the most expenisve , but i think they are worth it , just my .02
if you go with the new heads you might also want to try a bigger carb. i know, i'm opening a can of worms here. but the flow is gonna improve a lot. i run edelbrock performer heads and a holley 750HP. i'm happy. my car is race track only but you might want to bump it to a 650 or 675.
I dont know anything about World Products heads. I thought about a bigger carb if I go with a better set of heads but wasn't sure if it was going to be to much. I love to do the ProCharger but I don't know if the engine will hold it. Also a company mentioned that the block itself might not hold to much over 500hp & with a small charger on a carb, it will be real close if not over the 500 hp mark.
Go with the ProCharger and about 6-8psi. The Carb Shop out of Ontario, Ca does well with blow-thru carb setups. or just squeeze the thing!
What are your plans for the car? AFRs make great power but with your roller cam lifters you'll need the spring upgrade package so now you're looking at about $1450. AFRs normally come with dual springs for hydraulic flat tappet cams and they don't have helicoiled intake and exhaust bolt holes like the Edelbrocks. If it's basically a street car that you put a lot of miles on and have to perform regular maintainence, the Eddys are better built heads. Twisted Wedges are kinda right in between those two, but you have to play around with pushrod lengths and valvetrain geometry to get them set up correctly due to the non-inline valves.
I think roush and dart and world are all pretty much cast the same way if not by the same people. These heads went 7.19 in a pump gas street car.
those are all decent choices...it really comes down to what will work best with you complete package.
The car is a project car that I only drive on weekends or once to work during the week. My goal is to have a very hot street car that I can take to the track or even drive to the track, make a few people mad and drive back home also. I'm also thinking of moving to a 3.80 rear gear too. Basicly just like some of you...a well mannered monster.
I did a lot of reading a while back to pick the best head for me. Flow charts and articles all pointed to AFRs. Hands down. IMO, you won't be happy with 165s though. They are considered entry level mild street and do not have the same level of AFR engineering in them. In my studies, I found that well ported 69-73 stock 351w heads will flow as well as most 165 to 170 aftermarket heads. AFR's really shine over and above other heads at the 185 level. 205s if you are working on a 351 or larger cubes. The exhaust ports are day and night compared to stock or close to stock. Also, I agree with the idea that you could get away with a larger carb. 3310 would be my choice for an auto trans. Gotta be 'supertuned' though, or it's not worth doing. Good luck Dave Edit: Further down this thread I have withdrawn my opinion of using larger heads.
