I'm going to document the build of the 71 Maverick big block drag car in this thread for anyone interested in keeping track of it. The pics are of a part of my shop where it will all take place, we still have some work to do here before moving the car in. The motor is a 460 from a 78 Lincoln, beleive it or not...there is a block in there somewhere. My company, Excel Heating & Cooling, will be the primary sponsor of the car, It will be named the " Excelcutioner"
See...I told ya there was a block in there somewhere, I think King Kong torqued those head bolts down..it will go to the machinist later this week...if he tells me he feels comfotable with an 80 over bore it will end up being a 557 stroker. The kit will be ordered from Coast High performance if I can get an internally balanced forged crank from them.
at least someone's making progress.... Yes, those 460 head bolts are a bear. I remember breaking an impact socket with a break-over bar trying to get them loose on one of my old 460s. I believe the torque is somewhere around 140 LB-FT if memory serves me correctly.
I broke a half inch drive socket on it today with a breaker bar..didn't budge....gonna try a three quarter inch drive impact socket tomorrow. Boy howdy Frank...if she knew what was goin into this she would be the executioner and I would be a dead man
Shouldn't have said this to Frank. Can you say blackmail? Hey, Rick. I've got an air impact wrench that works at 400 ft/lbs of torque - reverse. They make 'em stronger than that. Unless I'm totally ignorant, I know of no reason why you can't use one of those to remove the head and main bolts. I think there would be less chance of twisting and breaking the head bolts than using a long breaker bar.
Terry I'm hoping to get an air compressor and some air tools this week..the air compressor I was using left when the cars that were in that shop left. Imagine that, I tell the guy he has to get his cars out of my shop and he takes his compressor too...some people
So I take it you bought that car? Looking forward to following the progress......just one question for now....does this car have any chance of making it to the round-up?
John it won't make this one...maybe 2006, there is a good possibility I'll be bringing 2 if the daughter's is worthy and I can get the wife to drive it.
O. K. after alot of research, I think I'm gonna build the engine around some Jon Kasse prepared Super Cobra Jet heads. I'm gonna call them tomorrow and get there recommendations on preparing the block and what they recommend on a rotating assembly, then go with their recommendations on the top side. I think when it gets right down to it, its the heads that make the biggest difference. What do yall think? thoughts, input, ideas even constructive criticism? http://jonkaaseracingengines.com/
Ok, another question......is this a 1/4 mile car or 1/8 mile? one more thing I would suggest.......and this is just my thoughts..... even though it seems that FFW and those other groups change their rules on a regular basis.....and again I am not exactly sure if you are building (bracket racer) or what, but you might gander at their rules when you start the build and see if you are "close" to a particular class that they run(heads-up) and if you think you might be competitive it might be worth the trouble to maybe purposely build it in a certain direction.....just thinking out load.... did that make since?
