Drove the Comet into the shop today. Securely perched on jack stands. My tranny buddy suggested that I tighten up the rear band adjusting screw, and see if reverse works. Nope on that one. Next I drop the pan. And then the valve body. Clank. Something just landed in the pan of slop. Further examination reveals that something is missing, master says I should be able to find all the parts..... next thing is to remove the transmission from the car Jeff is going to send me a care package of all the stuff I am going to need to make it go again. I never done a auto tranny before, this is going to be interesting. -Pat
There is a book on how to rebuild your ford transmission available. Not sure offhand who puts it out. Good luck.
This reminded me the time a buddy came over wanting me to help him rebuild his C4. Neither one of us seen the inside of an automatic. We started taking parts out per directions in the book...laying each part in order next to the one we just took off and came across the "blow compressed air in this hole". He shot about 95-100 pounds in the hole and blew transmission fluid everywhere. I looked up at him...he was looking at me and we both laugh so hard at each other because we had all these little brown spots on our face, arms and tee shirt. Every time one of us looked at one another one of us would start laughing again. It got to the point that I finally went and washed my face and put on another shirt to keep him from laughing. My point is...be easy on the compressed air to begin with. Be sure to have a clean work bench, plenty of clean rags and clean type F ATF to grease the parts before putting it back together. And yes, the rebuild went fine.
Haynes puts out the "Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul" tech-book. It is a step by step overhaul manual with pictures. They are sold in most auto parts stores.
I have that bok and it worked very well for me, although all i did was dissemble the trans. but then I got it all back together and had no parts left over. There are a huge amount of pics in that book.
I always have lots of parts left over. They are all used and have been replaced with new ones but I always have parts left over. The guy that picks up my scrap metal for recycling loves it.
Good luck with it! I suggest getting that book too, was very helpful to me. And while you've got it apart, why don't you install a Trans-Go 40-2 "reprogramming" kit? It's cheap, and you will be glad you did! It was pretty recently I tore into mine and that was my first time opening up an auto trans. I had no problems at all though. Just respect it, take your time and make sure you've got good documentation within arm's reach and I think you'll have fun and be proud of the results! That's how it went for me anyway.
oh, Frank.... I also work on AODs and there are a lot more parts left over from them.............. I liked it the other way - turn it back!
yanking it this evening I got parts, and my trans expert on speed dial. So a few quality hours and I should have the patient on the workbench. This is gonna be fun! -Pat
It is done! Today I finished up the details, filled the transmission, then drove it. Works like a charm. (I had no idea how fast these things are) Then I was obligated to make a phone call. A old friend of mine was interested in the car. I put a fair price on it, and a "tail light" warranty. The car drove away from me this evening I will miss it, for awhile. -Pat
