Is it true that the ford 8.8 does not have a third member, chunk?? Only the 8 inch and 9 inch have third members??? I was told that I have an 8.8 third member with fox gearing that would not work in my 8inch rear the guy wanted to give me 25.00 for a core charge and rebuild my old 8 inch gears.. I kept it for a guy at work that was looking for 8.8 gears now I find out I was getting ripped off..:naughty: I will look when I get home to check out the gears that are in it.. I need a set of gears to upgrade the 2.79 that I have hoping for 3.79 or 3.55 will see in the morning.....
Ford part number on gear is d4zw-4210c cannot find this part number anyone have old part number refrence chart??\carrier number is d20w4668d cannot find this either...
Counted teeth on gear 34 teeth thinking 3.40 gear just under 3.5 rotations to one revolution on the gear anyone???

    I don't quite follow...
The 8" and 9" have removeable chunks.
The 8.8" and others have integral chunks, or carriers, that cannot be removed from the overall housing. Those must have the gear and differential setup in the housing.
The 8" and 9" carriers can be removed and gears setup separately from the housing.
The 8" and 9" gears can be changed very quickly if you have multiple chunks setup.
The integral housing types cannot have the gears changed between races or whatever.

    8" rears are common with: 2.79, 3.00, 3.25, 3.40, 3.55 gears from the factory.
I have heard of 3.80, but don't know if it's strictly aftermarket.
4.11 and lower gears can be had from aftermarket as well.

9" rears have countless gear combos... Parts are far more common too, so they can actually be cheaper to build than an 8" once you have the housing core.

You gotta count the ring gear teeth, then the pinion teeth...
    The formula is:
Ring teeth / pinion teeth = gear ratio

If you have a 3.40 there, you will find 10 pinion teeth.

    34 / 10 = 3.4 (3.40)

If you do have a 3.40 8" gear, it probably came from a Pinto/Bobcat.
That is the most common source for that ratio.

Look for Pintos, M2s, Bobcats, and maybe even Torino/Fairlanes.
They were all available with decent gears depending on options and engines.

I4 Pintos with AC will usually score a 3.55.
Without AC will usually be 3.40.
Same with the Stangs and Bobcats, but 3.40 is more common to those from what I can tell.
Some Bobcats and Stang2s will have limited slip, which is always a nice find.
I have heard that all V8 Stang2s came with limited slip standard, however that engine combo also only came with a 3.00 gear, so it's bittersweet.
The V6 cars are the ones to look for... 3.40 with limited slip option.

I6 Torinos and Fairlanes could net you a 3.25 gear.
Nothing better though from what I have seen.
    Rancheros too.
