Is it remotely possible to change the heads without pulling the motor after doing this? That is one thing I miss about my 69 z28, the heads were easily removeable with the motor still in the car. (and the fact that I sold it for 5k and it is now worth 30k! )

The only way you can't pull the heads is if you have installed studs.Otherwise it is a staight up job.Done it many times.

You can remove the heads from a 302 (without studs) with the shock towers still stock.
    No problem.

Even if you have studs you can remove the heads. ARP head studs have an allen wrench hole in the top so you can unscrew them just like a bolt.

I didn't know that about ARP studs, should have figured though. They sure have quality stuff and seemed to be on the cutting edge.
Scotty P.just be careful when you lean over to lift those babies out.Do it right so you don't hurt your back. They are a little on the heavy side(cast iron that is)I also like to take the air hose and blow thru the intake first to try and get as much anti-freeze out as possible.Cuts down on the mess.

    FYI
The broached (allen head) head studs are fairly new at ARP. The earlier ARP studs do not have the allen head.

So did I,but I did have to take loose each motor mount & jack it up a bit to get the head off the studs, otherwise they would have came right out(y)

Thanks all. 54 minutes from engine shutdown to heads on garage carpet! I am a bit worried about accurate torque settings on the lower bolts though. They are not easy to get to cleanly.. Thanks for the help!
